For those who Dj highschool dances, is the sound system usually provided by the school?
Also, can anyone recommend a good set of speakers and an amp? maybe $150-200 for speakers (each) aaand I don't know about amp.
Suggestions?
Thanks :D

Obviously this is your first time using a PA system. Best you go to a local PA hire company, tell them the size of the hall you'll be playing in. And the amount of expected people. Then hire what they recommend. At the end of the gig you will know what size PA system you will need for next time.

Yes I agree - hire it in.
If that's all you've got to spend, don't bother. Save up until you've got enough money to buy something worthwhile.

no..
sound systems for high schools need to be somewhat large, as the others stated, your best bet is to rent a system for now..

Cheap and Good are almost always incompatible..
My current speakers (QSC k series) cost me >$4000 and are only considered mid range.. (and I would not recommend them for a large high school dance, unless I purchased more of them)
If your just getting into the biz, find yourself a used system (DJ's are always upgrading or going out of business), and start small..
Even better, find a local multi-op to work for.

Like everyone said the sound systems would need to be large for a high school event.
No I would not expect the High school to provide such, unless you ask them if they will have a PA there to use.
I personally have many of different PA systems that I call sound "rigs" I have RIG - A which is the biggest and best of what I own*. somewhere amps drivers, sound board, mics, speakers over all quick add up of costs over 32k in gear for that rig. Not including its trailer.. in this price Compaired to the boys who provide the sound at a outdoor concert.. this rig is well childs play compaired to that!
I have Rig B Which is perfect for Medium sized - large events venues about 1Ok in gear
I also have Rigs C,D,E,F,G which are all identical usually use one for smaller venues. These were individual purchased all cables and sound boards and wireless mics came to be about 1.6k a complete set. granted the speakers were only like 800.00 for the system but by the time you buy all the other stuff to have complete systems your looking at about 1.6k
Now Rigs C,D,E,F,G are all "daisy chainable, and if they were all used at the same event may out perform my A RIG, wouldn't know as I have never actually daisy chained more than two of them at a time. If you must know they are the B-52 Matrix system the smaller 3 piece units they are V1000. I would feel 100% safe daisy chaining all of those together for a High School Dance. But I also would feel confident in just using my A rig.
Granted I also "rent out" my rigs to fellow DJ's that I know respect my gear.
Now did all this gear happen over night... NO... It took me a while dumping everything I made and from DJing and then some to get them.
Also, check craigslist, and or other places like that like someone said. People are always upgrading their stuff, retiring, or finding out that they just can't put their gear to work, OR they get hard up for cash so they sell their gear cheap, or you run into the occasional person who happened to have alot of money to play with to buy toys they wanted to play dj, and found out it wasn't their cup of tea. Rule of thumb on buying used gear from some individual. Test it out on the spot before you hand over cash. Even if gear is in next to perfect condition do not pay retail pay about half of what it was worth new! so if it cost 1000 to buy at the store, they asking 800 for it offer them 500. cash no more assuming it works.

Let me tell you, I did my first ever HS dance last year after being in the business for no more than 2 years. It was the high schools first ever dance and I got good reviews plus got 4 more school dances for the rest of the school year.
Wanna know how I did it? Look at my profile picture to see my exact setup.
All my gear is powered. The most expensive piece of equipment is my EV Live 18" powered sub retailed at 799.00.
2 Beringher 15" powered speakers. (345 for both off craigslist)
1 Denon MC-3000 plus a flight case (500)
Lights:
1 ADJ laser for 99.00 (can't remember the name)
2 rovers and 1 old LED light (200 for those 3)
1 Hemisphere light from Chauvet for 150 (my newest light)
And that's it. Got all that for under 2500 and I made 400 that night : ) Not bad I would say. : )
I will add more stuff to my "rig". Not sure where I will invest yet.
