Will VDJ 8 have beat grid correction in order to combat beat drifting found in older rock, punk etc?
Inviato Tue 28 Jan 14 @ 2:36 pm
that would be awesome since i have some vinyls riped and they drift so a nice "ableton like warp mode" would be awesome to implement.

From what I've managed to see/hear in preview videos/discussion, it won't be "Ableton warping in DJ software".
Rather than being able to adjust sections of the waveform to align them to the grid, you'll be able to adjust sections of the grid to the audio. So the audio will still be drifting, but the grid will be drifting with it!
How this works when mixing a drifter with a tighty remains to be seen. Will the tighty become drifty?
What about when mixing two drifters, each with drifts in different places? Do they each become more drifty?
I guess it's down to which track is the master. So if the master is tight, then the slave will have to be "tempo tweaked" live by VDJ in order for each grid point to keep up with the master. Ergo they both end up being tight.
If the master is drifty then the slave would have to be "untightened" to sync with the drifty track. They both end up drifters.

i dont think i seen any of that in the reviews but would be nice. just a over haul to the beat-grid completely, this one is so non intuitive. other softwares beat grids are so functional. ive always wanted a more user friendly grid. Those little blocks things look so elementary.

They're called "beat grid anchors". See 5:11 on this video.

And Scott said Andrew was aiming at a target release date in 2nd quarter 2013 ..... what happened?

v7 was working rock solid, and the best version we have ever had ;)
So we decided on using the opportunity to develop the v8 platform further than we originally planned, and use time polish and fine tune things to be as solid and as reliable as the v7.
All the extra time used will of course benefit you all ;)

So will there be beat grid correction or not?

will be easier to adjust grids, bpm etc..
But to "combat" non rigid beats on a live recording of an old rock track, you have to be a bit dj yourself, in any software.
There is no magic to fix a "bad" recording .. Mixing a song with irregular beats pattern, with a song that has, you have to fine adjust yourself.
Or you can try lock the beats and let the software "force" in place, but even vdj 7 can do this ;)

Thanks DJ in Norway. I am good with having to "fine tune" a mix but just having something that assists in that process is a bonus! Now I manually adjust pitch while mixing all the time so that's not a big deal at all. But wanting to mash-up a song like Don't Stop Believing by Journey or lay another rhythm track behind it is very tedious at best because the song swings from about 116 bpm to about 122 so for remixing and recording mash-ups is is a pain in the butt. Now to make small pitch adjustments live for the 10 seconds during a mix transition is no biggie.
Thanks for your answer.

I figure you will be able to quantise drifting tracks with the timeline function, although ableton will probably be the less painful way to do it, (not that sorting drifters out on ableton isn't labourious)

Drifting beats during a blend is why the DJ should always keep one ear in his headphones and, one hand on the jog/bump/control vinyl. Never give up on the blend until it's complete.

I agree; and I do but like I said to do a remix or mash-up it is extremely difficult. Now I have taken a song, loaded it up in Adobe Audition and manually quantized a drifting song and did pitch adjustment so it didn't sound funky...but that the the better pert of 3 hours to do one song.

Thanks "DJ in Norway" ..... extra features that sounds great ... VDJ8 even further ahead of the game when it lands.
great news cant wait to use these great features!

Tantrix, funny you should mention Don't Stop Believin'...
That's one of the songs I've created my own "Ableton Special" version of. I wasn't keen on how long it took to reach a beat, so I added percussion during the intro and beefed up the kick drum a little. Things like that are easy once Live has warped it to a solid tempo.

So you know the tempo swing is pretty drastic....not fun to mix with that's for sure.

I find that as long as Live has a beat to follow (either audibly or visibly) it does a pretty good job of locking things to the grid itself, without too much human intervention.
Where it gets trickier is when the beat of the song is too subtle for a poor ol' computer to latch onto, but even then there are ways of getting around it. I started on something a few weeks back where I had to tap a beat out myself (into a second Live track) to create a "tempo map" which I could use to pull both tracks into line (you lock the tracks together so warping one also warps the other, then warp the guide track).
EDIT: I just found a Rock Dance Mix of it on SoundCloud that's not too bad. Mine's not so "souped up".

Just checked and I only have 18 versions of this song, (seems I should have at least 25, I must be slipping)14 are video. Just think back to when we mixed music that was created, without the drum machine. Skills that most will never achieve. However, I have embraced the technology, and have just bought some really good remixes and mashups of this track. I know you guys have the time and skills to do your own remixes, I wish I did. Now, if I could just find a remix of "Who Made Who". This song still gives me a challenge.

What are you looking for a dance mix, dubstep or simply a proper drum track wit proper steady bpm? I can see what I can do to do a simple remix (no guarantees though).
