Hi All,
It's time for me to upgrade my PA system so I've been looking on the internet and reading alot of posts about active speakers etc...
I am looking for 2-12" active speakers and 1-15" active subwoofer for added bass when needed. I've read many posts about Yorkville, RCF, EV, QSC, JBL and Yamaha but I want some tips and advise on which model and brand to buy. So many choices out there.
I am a mobile DJ and I also rehearse with a band, so I am looking for a system that would be able to handle both tasks.
Currently I have a set of Peavey's 115D but they keep breaking on me and I want to buy a set of higher quality speakers. My budget is 850$ per speaker and 900$ for the subwoofer.
thanks
Luc

I recently upgraded my 12 and 15's to the Turbo sound Milan 15 powered speakers for tops for smaller functions and for band vocals. They have amazing headroom and very clean. 1100 watts peak each. Someone lent me a, believe it or not a Behringer 18" sub EUROLIVE B1800D-PRO and It was crazy. I've had many subs in my life but these were awesome for the price. I ended up buying a pair for Djing and live band use. I haven't had sound like that(both together) in 30 years of DJing and doing live sound for bands. The subs are rated at 1400 watts. Of course I know this is peak watts watts per box but rms is about half. That's still kick ass powerful. The Turbos are light but the Behringer subs are pretty heavy. But I never had a sub that just one person can carry properly anyway.

Thanks for the tip about the Turbosounds speakers. I've never heard of them before now. I heard of the Behringers subs being good and the price cannot be beat so that's what I might just end up buying for the sub but how about mains 12" driver?

Have you heard of the new Mackie SRM 550 (12" Tops) and the SRM 1850 Sub? All of which are rated @1600W Peak. Looks like these speakers falls within your budget.

I have not heard of the new Mackie's. I will have to go into a local shop (LA Music) and have a listen to them for sure. I just saw a few youtube videos and they look very nice indeed. thanks :)

Does anybody know how the Mackie SRM series compare to the EV ZLX series? I am assuming they are the same. Light weight, made a China etc... LA Music doesn't have any SRM550 and no SRM1850 but AVShop.ca does have 1 pair of 550 and 1 pair of 1850 so I might just go there on Friday and have a listen. But before I do that, does anybody here own a pair of these already and can they tell me how they like them or dislike them?

Read the reviews out there for durability on the SRM's... I can attest to the ZLX sound though: I own QSC K12's and they're 99.9% as good, just without the QSC badge on the grill, and 40% cheaper. Actually wish I had put the extra $800 toward an extra sub.

there are few reviews on the Mackie's SRM and also a few videos but not enough. I was thinking of getting a nice set of Yorkville's NX55P with a LS720P sub. That system will cost me 1700$ for the mains and 900$ for the sub. (2600$)
If I get the Mackie's I can get 2 12" (SRM550) and 2 18" subwoofers (SRM1850) for pretty much the same price. (2800$)
so for 200$ more I get an extra 18" subwoofer, that sounds like a sweet deal. I am thinking that the sound of the Mackie's will not be comparable to the Yorkville's something got to give right? :)

I own 3 SRM450's. Theseare first revision, so they do not suffer the over heat conditions of the later releases. But, I would watch out for that. The sound and reliability of mine have been excellent.

Be careful when buying speakers that look and sound like everyone else. We did our research and spent some money and got the HK Audio Elements system. Not cheap but VERY good. And we look like NO ONE else.

Well actually you look like all the other DJs and bands using HK Elements. :-)
I know what you mean about Mackie SRMs though. Very commonplace.
I think sometimes people just buy speakers "by default" based on what someone else is using/has said, without bothering to audition speakers themselves and picking what sounds good.

I totally agree with what you said. I would never buy speakers just on advise. I need to hear them and see for myself. I just wanted a rough idea on there reputation out there (Mackie) I've never own a pair so I am not sure how they are. I just wanted a decent system that will be reliable and be able to handle a wedding of 150-300 people and be able to handle a band once in awhile. :)

C'mon guys, no one is coming into your gigs, saying "Wow, he has HKs, so he must be a real DJ". Don't lose sight of who we are playing to. I have said it many times before, most of our clients and guest, don't know what good sound is. They get their music through an iphone, or some other mp3 player. They are trying to get drunk, get laid, or both. These people are not audiophiles, music critics, or a room full of "non working" DJs. Most of us would be hard pressed to tell the difference, in a blind test, of speakers in the same price range. It also depends on what you put into a speaker. I would not buy the cheapest on the market, because they will not hold up to the task. But I would not buy the most expensive, unless there was a overwhelming advantage, and I had the money. You have a budget, bring your own music to listen to the speakers. They have all kinds of processors to make everything sound good. I don't own any of the speakers you are looking at, but think of this. For a couple of dollars more, you can get another sub. Is it possible, that you could use a second sub one day? I never buy anything I can't pick up by myself. Also take into account of the inputs. Will I have to buy new speaker cable, or will it work with the speaker cable I have. What about an onboard mixer, line inputs, mic inputs? In other words, what matters to you?

No, but if you have Bose L1 speakers then apparently you will increase your bookings manyfold simply because they say Bose on the front (according to Bose L1 users that is).

They are cute, and if I had the option of having multiple setups, I would think about it. I am still rocking Mackies SRM 450, with 1501 subs. They did not have all these other speakers when I bought them. Plus I got such a great deal, I would do it all again. However, if I had to buy speakers today, I would look at the QSC, RCF, and take a look at the new Mackies. We use the QSCs at the conventions, so I know how they sound.

HK have that German quality feel about them and the specs are pretty good too.
I like the handles, dual top hat, small room - large room switch (on the linear models), grills and sound.
Plus the grills are held on by proper screws with a thread not self tapping wood screws lol

I have the QSC K12 and K-Subs.... amazing sound subs don't give the punch in the chest which some people love but the Tops, i don't regret getting them at all.

i own yorkville nx55p that are so clean sounding and extremely easy to work on for replacing any damaged components, not that i've had to replace anything in the 3yrs i've owned them. i'm so glad i chose them. i run them to my hercules 4mx with connection of xlr to 1/4 jack. when i need the extra bass i rent the yorkville 750 subs (i cant remember exactly what they are called) that run beautifully together. just run the subs connected to your tops and your tops connected to your mixer. i have blasted outdoor parties with this setup and they take a beating!
i definately plan on buying those subs

thanks all for your posts/tips... I decided to buy 2 Mackie SRM 650's and 1 Mackie SRM1850. The sound/weight and look where exactly what I was looking for. The speakers are about 40lbs and the sub is 70lbs which and it's not too bad to carry around. The speakers have a 2 input built-in mixer right behind them so it's perfect if you want to hock up a mic or ipod or whatever else you want directly to the speakers. The speakers have a nice DSP processor as well then can match up the SRM 1850 perfectly. Also the speakers can be used for a monitor perfect design and again it has a DSP processor to EQ the speakers to whatever you want them to be used as. "PA" "DJ" "Monitor" or "Solo". They also have a feedback eliminater which I have not tested yet but will shortly. This is great when you are doing those karaoke gigs and the singer stands in front of the speaker. :)
I bought them at www.avshop.ca on Friday and I they guys at avshop were great. Highly recommended. There show room is in Markham. Their prices and service was great.
