Just saw this on Digitaldjtips.com, when I play out I always setup my speakers up in Stereo but they're saying it might be better in Mono because only a small precent of the people will be in the sweet spot to get the full stereo effect. What do you guys do when using your own PA @ a gig?http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2014/06/questions-told-dj-mono-stereo/

Sub bass & kick bass amps; Mono as bass isn't directional (that much)
Mids and tops: Stereo
But we only use the 8K rig in a tent that can hold 80 people,
Other rigs I've worked with, have just one stack and they go mono all the way,
If I go to a live gig I always work my way to the sweet spot (primal scream @ sonar were amazing)

Stereo, in large spaces, loses it depth and separation. In bigger rooms, for crowds of say, more than 200 people, running a dual mono set up would be more beneficial. As pointed out, base signals are better in mono, via a subwoofer.

Agreed, although that article seems to be referring to DJs who play in clubs rather than mobile.
For the average event that a mobile DJ is likely to play, I'd say it doesn't really matter that much whether you run in mono or stereo. In fact, running in mono can cause problems with some tracks that aren't mono compatible.

How can a track not be mono compatible?

It really depends on how it's been produced. Sometimes if a track's not been checked in mono, it can cause odd sound issues because of phase cancellation etc.

if you are playing some flavor of house or dance music im sure u wont have any issues with the cancellation mentioned above.
other types of music could have an issue.

??
The issue isn't genre specific!

Indeed, with a lot of music recorded in stereo you can notice slightly muffled/different-sounding high frequencies when simply mixed by averaging the 2 channels.
Even though the stereo effects are probably not very noticeable in larger spaces I don't see much harm in doing so. The number of modern tracks that use extreme stereo separation is quite small I think.

I read the article in DDT and to be honest was totally confused by it, god only knows what I'm running in. I checked all my midi controllers and no mono/stereo switches and as mentioned in the DDT article only serato and traktor have mono/stereo tick boxes in config.
I suppose it all depends on which channel i plug my midi controller into on my main mixer, but then you lot are saying that some songs are recorded in stereo and others mono! makes me wonder.. what happens if your in mono and you play a track recorded in stereo and vice versa.
