I'm new to the whole DJ thing, I've been practicing regularly and seem to be getting the hang of it. How ever, can anyone please tell me how to set up the audio so you have deck one playing through your headphones and deck playing through your speakers. I've bought a split cable but there is no more options in the configuration. If it is possible please help me before i spend money on a controller.

Which version are you using?

Virtual DJ 8

What is your hardware setup?
Where and to what are your speakers connected?

My laptop has a split cable connected to the headphone jack, 1 of the ports for my head phones and the other port is plugged into an AUX cable which is plugged into my stereo system.

Audio settings (not options, the first thing you see when you open config)>Card>Click Stereo to mono splitter>Apply

Fantastic, I'm halfway there, I've got both decks playing in different sides of my headphones however you can also still hear it partly through the speakers even though the slider is fully over to one deck....

That doesn't sound right to me.

The type of splitter cable required for DJ use only provides a mono feed to each output - so the signal to your headphones would not be stereo (or able to provide split cue).

Where's this splitter cable from?

Its a cheap £5 cable from PC World. Which one would you suggest?

Ah, then it's probably just a normal stereo splitter - intended for headphone sharing, not DJing.

BTW you could've bought one elsewhere for £1 or less!

What you need is a "DJ splitter cable" which aren't generally available from high street shops like PC World.

Alternatively you could get some USB headphones...

Yeah thats exactly what I bought, lesson learned! Thanks for your help.

I've just found this on eBay via a quick Google...

Perfect. I also want to start learning to use a mixer but im not sure which one is good to start off with or which one is worth its money....

When you say "mixer", do you actually mean a controller? Something like a Mixtrack Pro that connects to your computer via USB and allows you to control the software?

Yeah I want to start using a controller at some point. Which one would you recommend for beginners?

Wrong question young grasshopper, As long as it's mapped all controllers a friendly enough, the question is, what's your budget?

Fair enough haha, I'm glad I'm on this to learn. I guess anything up to £300 if there is anything good for that price??

£300 is venturing into decent 2 channel gear, you can get a vestax VCI100MK2 for less than your budget, and that's pretty nice for a beginner, but for £350 you can snap up a VCI380 which offers more buttons for cue's, effects, numark has some offerings that look good at the £300 mark but I've never used any, I'm from the era when numark was known for cheep and cheerful, times have changed so I'm told.

Best bet is visit a shop that sells this kind of gear, have a good look, knob twiddle, short list 2 at budget and 2 £100 over budget then go home and scour the internet for your choices,
More recommends will be posted I'm sure, but it's personal tastes some will swear by a unit others will have had one bad experience and won't touch that brand again

Yeah I can imagine. I shall get onto that soon though. Thanks very much for all your help!
