Topic: Desperate for Advice!! Throwing one out.....

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

One of my laptops (new) is running Windows 8.1, my other an older one, is running Windows 7. How I wish I had never bothered with 8.1!!

My old lappie is set up with User Name Jules, but I set up the new one as Julian. The problem is I want identical filepaths for my playlists etc on each computer, and so I want to change my User Name and filepath on the Windows 8.1 machine to show Jules. I thought it would be straightforward but apparently not.

Can someone help please as to how I can arrive at having, for instance, an Itunes filepath looking like this on both machines:

"c:\Users\Jules\Music\ItunesMusic\...." on both machines.

Can't you just create a new user called Jules, with admin rights, then delete the old user from the new one?

Flatten the 8.1 machine and install Win 7.

I added a User Jules with Admin authority and rebooted. At the root of C there remained just one option 'Julian'. Bamboozled completely by W8.1. I have since disconnected from my MIcrosoft sign in (new users beware) and added Jules as a 'Local' and still the User Jules does not appear under Users on the C drive.

It's an absolute nightmare to change the primary user name. I've seen lots of threads on other sites and they all recommend the nuclear option.

Thanks for your replies guys and it is reassuring in one way in that the problem is recognised but disappointing that I've spent nearly £600 on a laptop that frankly I need to nuclearise and start again. By the way Locodog, what exactly do you mean by go 'nuclear'?

Groovindj, ...yes I found that earlier thanks but wasn't keen on obviously experienced techies arguing over the best way to do it; I am going nowhere near the Registry.

I just can't believe that HP/Microsoft sell a laptop that is so obviously inflexible.

Completely format it and install windows 7

You can avoid doing that, but it means registry editing and it isn't easy, even then you have to keep up to date with 2 o/s' If you don't like 8.1 why keep it?

ok thanks, understood.

Or use the inbuilt recovery to reformat the machine and set the username correctly :)

Far more easy solution:
Use junctions since your drive is NTFS formated.
Junction is an "alias" for a folder and it's transparent to the OS.
Imagine it as a shortcut to a folder...

Mklink /j c:\users\usernamefromoldlaptop c:\users\yournewusernameonnewpc

Done!

u could always just make a folder under c and u could have c:/music on both pcs no issues at all

no need switching users or anything

i think sometimes we get caught up using those premade areas and forget we can make our on folder anywhere we want :-)

Great, now I have a whole new avenue to research. I assume you will have to treat one path as a 'master' in regards to what is written to the database and m3u lists.

I have not had issues with 8.1. I would hold off on nuking it. Microsoft does not go backwards in future OS support. Plus, there is no resaon to go purchase 7 when you can get 8 to play nice. You just have to work through the differences.

Are you trying to use the same paths for backup purposes?
