I am looking for a perspective on edited music vs uncut at the club scene. What is preferred? What do guys play? Is it frowned upon by party goers? What do they say about it? Any bit if info would help thanks.

What you mean by edited? censor of bad words (clean edits), or remixes/mashups (producer/dj edits) ?
Remixes/edits/mashups by other producers/djs if for sure a great thing, can make your set/collection stand out vs the others..
Clean edits is a USA thing, over here in Europe noone cares if its a bad word or two in the lyrics ;)
And for USA i guess it depends on the gig.. Sweet 16 vs a nightclub.

Don't forget we need clean edits for weddings here in europe............. oh, and school proms I would assume.

If it is clean edits you are talking about, I find that people are not surprised if the song is censored. It generally doesn't bother them. Most of the time they will shout out the original lyrics anyway. When I play an unedited version, however, sometimes I do get a surprised look and smiles. Almost like it wasn't expected. I only play dirty versions in certain places. In my opinion there is no issue with always playing clean tracks.
As mentioned above, the audience will sing out the original lyrics at times. Keep that in mind when playing for certain functions and such. Sometimes it's more about the content and suggestive meaning in a song when doing weddings, school dances, etc.

I was talking about censoring the bad words. I'd hate to have two versions of every song. Most of the time now I get videos so thats a lot of hard drive space it takes up. When I first started buying videos I was downloading about half censored and other half dirty.
Taking me a long time to go back download the dirty versions. I did notice one time at a bar I played a censored song and certain group of people started bobbing their head and singing along but stopped when they figured out it wasn't plaing their curse words.

In response to your question. It would depend on the club, pub, or bar. I had a gig that lasted about a month back in the day at a bar. The owner wanted to turn it into a night club 1 night a week. But it was a "Christian Bar and Club" so the music had to be clean edits only. Yeah let that one sink in. Anyway. I think it is grand to have options as far as having the explicit version of songs, and the clean edits/ Radio edit. Having both would keep you the most flexable.
I personally like the explicit versions. It just depends on your demographics I would suppose. Few adults at a club are going to be offended by 99.9% of the obscene words in songs or suggestiveness.
For weddings, It is a huge concern of about 80% of my clients that the music is clean. (yikes some of the older songs in my database were explicit) Now I get everything that is edited. Why? Because I can still do a club or bar with the clean edits. Few people are going to get overly mad that you are playing a clean edit. Think about it. Most people listen to the radio or streaming service. Most of the time the streaming service is playing an edit or radio edit. Many won't even bother buying the song anyway.
Even if a few were bobbing and then stop because you played a clean version. I would only get the dirty versions now for Key songs but not all of them. But if you are only wanting to DJ for the club then by all means get the dirty versions. But people will take notice (those looking for a dj for a private event) when you are out and you happen to be the DJ that has the clean edits. They will ask for a card and have you do their company functions etc. It is what it is.
Have a great day!

I don't feel the hard drive space is much of an issue with the cost of drives now. I'll get both versions, and color the dirty stuff yellow with (dirty) in the title tag.

I've always used clean edits for everything. but recently i've been getting more and more request for the dirty (unedited) versions. even PROMS. yes i did get it in writing. it's my ass on the line and i intend to cover it.

I don't get why you should play "clean" versions.
Bad words exit. Everyone is using them. Why censor them in a track?
And even IF they are censored. Still everyone will now what bad word was censored.
So what its the meaning of it?
It's another thing with videos and some explicit content. But unless it's a wedding or another event where underaged people are, I always play the dirty versions. If you are old enough to go to a bar or a nightclub, you should be old enough to handle some bad words or pictures.

Not in Denmark. For any occasion. Clean edits are REALLY frowned upon here.
If you play a clean edit in a club you'll get booed
Naturally I wouldn't play a song with a pure sexual content at a wedding, since that would be out of place (for most occasions, really)
But bad words should never be edited out if the artist chose to put them in the song.
If you don't like them, then stick with artists that don't put bad words in their songs
Only "Danish" radio stations based in the UK (for tax reasons, I assume) play some clean edits, and they get calls from listeners wanting to hear the original, so they try to get around it

Absolutly none. It's a crazy thing that has happened with clean edits

It's good to hear. I hope clean edits will become a thing of the past :)

When posted this up I was going ditch the clean edits because it had been quite some time since I've done a party for younger age group that required them. But yesterday I booked 2 gigs, high school graduation and birthday bash for a 17 year old. I guess haveing two versions of most songs is going to be the way to go. Thanks everyone!

17+ year olds need protecting from harsh language?
I'll never understand how over protective America's main stream is of what the rest of the world considers adults.

While I play edited tracks at certain events, I do agree it's silly.
While growing up my parents handed me their duplicate lp's that had suggestive content, drug inferences, language, etc. hat did not change how I behaved in society. I did not start swearing more. It also gave me more questions to ask them so that conversations about sex and drugs were brought up before people were asking me if I wanted to try them. While I do drink, to this day I have not had any drugs. I have no judgement against people that do, I just have no desire to. I also did not have a child when I was in my teens like many of my friends did. My children have also been educated and talked with in the same way.
I probably should stop hear to try and avoid a derailment of this topic.
Inviato Mon 11 May 15 @ 9:18 am
So you guys are saying the parents won't mind? Not saying the teen needs or should be censored. I was leaning on what the parents of the party person and all the parents of the other guests would say about it.
I'm just an inexperienced dj, don't hate lol. I just remember first few gigs I ever had and people started dancing really wild so the one upset family member got upset at me about it.
