I don't use it, I never have the time, but the idea is to preview your mix before going live.
You do a mix in the sandbox which only you can hear, whilst your main speakers are outputting a song loaded on a deck.

I sometimes use it to preview what the mix will sound like and if I need any kind of FX, filter etc. to smooth out the transition. Switch on SB, jump to the point where I know I'll be mixing in track 2 and just see...

You don't even have to test a mix fully to use it.
For instance if you don't fully remember what happens later in the song you can check if you remember correctly
Like if you can visually see a breakdown in the current song 2/3 in (very normal), and you wan't to do a mix where you put the intro of the new song on top of the broken down part of the current song and do a long transition, but you are not sure if the hook or vocals of the current song kicks back in 8, 16 or 32 bars after the breakdown starts, you can preview it with the sandbox function, so you know how many bars you max have to complete the transition
So in other (much fewer) words: You can also use it to simply preview the end of the song you are currently playing

Sandbox is great, but unfortunately it doesn't work with video files.
Therefore I haven't used it yet.
