I started the migration to Version 8 earlier this week; and overall, I'm very impressed with the changes that have been made. I am a "two soundcards" user that connects the two lines into the clubs' mixer.
I know that a lot of people tend to report "bugs" that turn out to be configuration issues, but in my case, I have a real "duplicatable" bug that prevents me from going full on to version 8. I reported it in the 8.1 Tech Support section below and have not heard back yet on the issue (Sampler (Sync) Bug in Version 8." In short, Sampler syncs to deck 1 but not deck 2.
The theory I'm checking on is the fact that it looks like implementing Version 8 doesn't do anything directly to 'kill' ones ability to use version 7 for gigging till the problem is fixed.
I realize that I am maintaining the 'virtualdj database v6.xml' and the 'database.xml files'; and keeping an eye on 'Tracklisting' compared to 'History'. Other than that, I don't see any reason why I can't gig this weekend on 7, even though 8 is installed.
Am I missing anything here? or is my assumption correct?
Thanks loads...

For the first part of your message: If it is a bug I'm sure the Dev team will fix it.
The second part: You're 100% correct.

You can still use VDJ 7 yes, its untouched by your VDJ 8 install, it has its own database etc ;)

Sampler syncs to MASTER deck, so if deck 2 is master it will sync to deck 2

Norway, it actually doesn't. You can load a track in 1, play a 'pitched' sampler beat with it, and it (the sample) will beatmatch, up or down.
Do the same with deck 2, even playing by itself, it won't. The sample beats will not follow deck 2 unless you load and sync another track in deck 1, then it follows.
Version 7 does not do that, so I'll call it a bug for now. :-)

I think the critical part here is 2 soundcards.
I tried to reproduce it will a 1 soundcard config, but wasn't able to.
Unfortunately I can't test it with 2 soundcards.

I think you're right. Because the crossfader never moves, it may not be clear to VDJ what the "master" is.
That said, I'm not even sure how version 7 got it right, but it did. I still think it has something to do with a flaw in how Version 8 'views' deck 2.
I'm actually able to duplicate the problem on my desktop, using Single Speakers output.
Put a song in 2, play it, turn on sampler beats, then vary the pitch. Song goes up and down, beats don't.
Do the same in deck 1, beats follow.
???

Jup, that is what I did and couldn't reproduce it.
I will give it another try.

Use the "kick" sampler in Instruments.
Crossfader at 50%
(I wish VDJ let us upload videos to show what it's doing :-)

Well its not a flaw, its how most all dj gear, dj softwares, producer softwares etc works.
It syncs to master. What else would it sync to :) has to be that way
Cant really remember how V7 samples synced, but i'm pretty sure it was exactly same ;)
As for using 2 cards (maybe you didnt use this in v7), and crossfader middle, the master deck should be the last deck you work on.
Alternatively you can explicitly set master deck easily. At the custom buttons on each side of the skin in VDJ 8, add a button to set master.
The action for the buttons would be : deck X masterdeck. (where X is the number of the deck)
Alternatively if you dont get the automatic behaviour, check if you have turned it off somehow.
In settings, look for autoheadphones (set always), this should auto select last deck you used / loaded a song on if i recall right, not infront of vdj right now.
(alternatively make a custom button in skin, with the action: masterdeck_auto )
Edit: After some testing, there might actually be something strange going on with the "auto master" when crossfader is left middle. It would be no way for VDJ to know what you intend as master I would think, and it follows the deck that has the loudest volume (by crossfader or volume faders). We'll test more, and get back to you ..

Yes it is linked to the loudest output,
I think the sampler needs a nudge option, this would help many cases.

Maybe I don't understand the issue. When I have a track playing in deck one, add a sample (kick), all is well. I add a track to deck two, monitor with headphone, I match the kick I hear in the headphone, make the mix, and all is well. I can leave that sample on or change to another sample at any time, and stay on beat. I can leave the sample on forever, and make perfect mixes, back and forth, and the sample stays on beat, because I am pitching to the sample which is playing, which is on beat with the previous track. I use faders to mix, and my cross fader is disabled.
