There are a couple things that can stop this. But first off if I read your title right, you can't use Apple Music tracks outside of iTunes.
Apple Music tracks are encrypted because you did not buy them. You rent Apple Music tracks as long as you subscribe to the Apple Music service. You are only allowed to download them for play on Apple Products (IOS / iTunes) while you do not have an internet connection. Their encryption is specifically meant to prevent you from stealing music and/or using it in other software. It is just the only way they can have full control of Apple Music property and prevent piracy.
I am not accusing you or anyone of stealing. I am only telling you why Apple Music tracks will not work with VDJ or in any other software beyond iTunes.

I have transferred iTunes to an external drive, but when I did that I could no longer see my songs in VDJ8. I am using a MacBook.

It looks correct in the iTunes database file: /volume/mypassport for Mac/iTunes/iTunesMusicLibrary.xml

Send us a screen shot(s) of what you are looking at.
If you have the iTunes DB set, you need to show iTunes in your browser tree on the left of the VDJ browser. Last, you can't use DRM encrypted songs (Apple Music).
A picture of what you are seeing will tell us allot.
