I've just got a Asus K55a laptop with 8gb ram and onboard Intel HD4000 graphics chip.
It is interesting that in the bios there is an option for allocating memory to the graphics. Mine was set at 64mb. It still run well mixing hd videos however I changed it to 512mb. Since vdj8.2 already runs well I doubt there can be an improvement.
In another area Win8 64bit updates are a mess and do not work properly.
Its hard to get updated to Win8.1.
Microsoft seems to be working very hard to make our good computers obsolete.
I've downloaded a Win8.1 iso from Microsoft and am considering kicking out all the Microsoft and Asus junk software.

Just be careful as the Windows serial with the machine will be OEM only and won't work on a standard ISO install. It's a common problem.
The update from 8.0 to 8.1 was delivered through Windows Update and can't be installed separately.

In the past I've been able to use the Microsoft automated phone service provided for activation in conjunction with a Microsoft downloaded operating system iso. That is dependent on the goodwill of Microsoft.
I have an unused Win 7 pro 64bit dvd waiting in reserve.
..you're right..things are tricky!
If you google Win8.1 your will find that Microsoft provide a Win8.1 iso download????
Asus provide software called Backtracker which will allow me to make a backup image on a USB flash drive. After that I can mess around to my hearts content. The image is about 12gb.

Yes, you can install 8.1 as a standalone ISO but the update from 8.0 to 8.1 isn't available as a separate install.

I suspect you may be right that the Microsoft Win8.1 image may not work.
I'm getting to Win8.1 one way or another or going to Win7 pro.

I prefer Win7 to Win8.x. Not to bash 8.x, many use it successfully, I've found it easier to work with Win7.
I know your hardware may not make the jump but Win10 is enjoyable.

I'm successfully running Win10 on two Asus X58L antique laptops at the moment.
They permit 1080p video mixing using VDJ8.2.
It's almost a miracle.
Microsoft don't do a free Win10 upgrade anymore?
I take this INTERNET tip with a pinch of salt but whilst updating Win8 disable secure boot in the BIOS.
We shall see.

@kradcliffe and TDBennett
Thxs..I'll give that a try.
I like Win 10!
Mind you I might be better upgrading from Win7 pro 64bit.
The pro version gives greater control over the behavior of the Windows update service.

I have a spare Win 7 Pro machine and may try updating it to see what happens (after taking an image backup file first of course).
Not sure if you can change the update cycle on Win 10 Pro, pretty sure they changed it to enterprise only?

No problem, I have known about this for a while but having no interest in Windows 10 it sat in the back of my mind.
My son got a new gaming PC for xmas and he needed Win 10 for DX12 support, but apart from that it really offers nothing significant over 7 or 8.1

I've been having a terrible time with the K55A. It has already been upgraded to Win8.1 using a C & D drive 40-60 split, but the system restore due to change of ownership has took it back down to Win8. Anyway Asus have stuck recovery partions all over the place, and in particular one in between the C & D drive preventing proper windows partition size management. Thats besides loads of errors on installing Win8 updates. I think this is the work of Asus, Microsoft are innocent. Anyway I disabled secure boot in the bios, replaced the HDD and installed Win10.
It's just starting..it will be interesting to see if I can activate it without spending any money.

THANK YOU MICROSOFT they activated Win10!
All I have to do now is get rid of all the rubbish on the original HDD, in particular the restore partitions, and reinstall.
Asus stinks (nice hardware though).
Microsoft rules!

..another point, while doing the win10 updates Microsoft provided an up to date Asus Driver Pack!
Wow.
That's really good!
Sorry for the extra post above 3 consecutive ones but I feel this is important. I suppose I could have started a new thread?
Note: My K55a went to work last night and did well!
