Hi Everyone,

Wondering if there is any way of connecting between two computers running VirtualDj for syncing purposes etc if playing back to back (and yes, I know that is lazy rather than manual beatmatching! :-) ).

I know that in the past (Ver 5?) this was possible as a way of increasing the number of decks from the two available but was dropped when 99 decks came online with Version 7.

Is it still possible either directly or indirectly, say via ableton or something?

Many thanks for any help

almost positive the answer is no the way you ask

you can connect 2 controllers to vdj on one computer and do it that way.

Ok, so nothing clever with a midi clock or whatever. Shame :-(

The nearest being perhaps two controllers on one computer with one being used on say Decks 1& 2 and the other being used on Decks 3 & 4 to kind of simulate a back to back situation?

My understanding of what you are trying to do is, you want 2 people to be able to connect to 1 controller? thus to be able to play back to back.

If so then the only you will achieve this is by using a specific controller which can accept 2 USB inputs.
Although this still wont sync both VDJ sessions together, you would have to beat match each session when switching over.

So to answer the question, as far as i know there is no way to sync the 2 sessions of VDJ together running on 2 different laptops.

Hi DJ Mel,

Not exactly, I'm not wanting one controller to run VirtualDj on two computers, I'm wanting two computers, with two controllers, to be connected the virtualdj on one computer could interact with Virtualdj running on the other computer. So for example you could sync one computer with another....

Does that make sense?

I was waiting on groovin to post something like "mix with your ears, be a real DJ and pretend the SYNC button is broken" hehe

OK, seriously. Not possible with VirtualDJ, since it doesn't have any MIDI IN Clock for the Decks to follow.
Depending on your available gear, what you could do is to route the Master Output signal from the other computer (sound card) to an input channel of your computer's sound card (so, some cabling here) and use it as LINE IN (AUX) to one of your decks.

This sir, is the reason why some of us paid a lot of money for high-end controllers that have this ability. DDJ-SZ DDJ-RZ, now the ddj-1000 and sx-3

sorry but you missed the point he wants 2 computer and 2 controllers synced together

not 2 computers and 1 controller :-)

Ok understand now and can relate as have also had this situation a few times when there has been a couple of us djing with 2 separate controllers.
But without wanting to sound condescending why do you need them to sync? Surely its a whole lot easier to just change the pitch fader so the bpms on the screen match?
As long as your track are scanned correctly if you set them to the same BPM they will be in sync pretty much all day long.

Ha Ha DjDad :-) Yes I was aware that someone might come in with something about 'Real Djing' which is why I acknowledged a certain lazyness in the original post! But so far I seem to have gotten away relatively lightly.....

And DJMel, I suppose I was only using Sync as one example of what might be useful.... so for example if you could set, say, deck 6 as being the second computer then not only if you set that as the Masterdeck would you be able to sync other tracks to whatever was going on in the second computer, you could also perhaps in theory be able to interact more with whatever the other dj was doing by taking over the output from there and interacting with it (effects etc) which maybe could make for some interesting performance possibilities....

I guess that is kind of what DJDad has suggested by routing the master output to a soundcard and the setting that as a line in... however that, I guess wouldn't have the midi clock info...

Don't know if that makes sense but I was really just interested in whether it could be implemented in order to see whether such possibilities could be explored..

Kinda of get the gist of what you are trying to explain, but to understand fully can you give a real world example of where you might use this?
Certainly would stop all the try real world djing comments etc. i.e. kind of gig you would use this setup, style of music, type of effects, how many channels you require, etc?

On a side note i'm sure its possible to run 2 controllers from 1 PC at the same time and run multiple decks that way. would needs some configuring but may get the desired effect you are looking for. Otherwise what you are asking is possibly bordering into the live performance aspect you may find with something like ableton live.

Lemme pitch in with OP.

I have been playing with other DJ's mixing back to back all of us using VDJ on our own laptops and with our own controllers.
In order to to beatmatch I normally look at their screen, than set my bpm as close as possible and mix with my ears.

Being able to network with the other DJ's laptop and synchronise would be helpfull in this scenario.
Being able to see some basic data of the tracks being played by the other DJ(s) (track title, time, bmp, key, eq settings, etc) would also help.
Being able to share tracks directly from my library with other DJ's would be another awesome feature.

I guess I'm asking for multiplayer support through a local server for VDJ.

Another possible use: controlling visuals on one computer directly linked to the output from the second, partners, computer? - though you could probably do that using djdads suggestion of turning the master output into a line in via a sound card channel...

Djdad, I was just thinking yesterday of revisiting this thread to find out if there was any update on the 'something good coming'.... and I see this morning that Ableton Link has just recently been added in the latest update..... Great stuff - Thanks!

Now I'm off to have a play!
