If I re-download VDJ onto a second laptop, I can use the data from the first laptop via the backup function in VDJ (as described). What isn't quite clear to me is whether it will also transfer my entire saved music collection or whether I should transfer that to the new laptop first.

You need to transfer all your media files separately and keep the same file structure.
