Topic: Club consolle setup Vs Controller Setup
Hello dear VDJ community I'd like to bring this point cause it happens to me more and more now I am DJing more in clubs.

This is my actual setup when I DJ - VDJ + Pioneer DDJ1000.
When I check most of the Club Consolle Setup, I find the following: 2 CDJ 3000 / 2000 + Pioneer DJM 800 or similar (old mixers without Pads).

Now I am using pads a lot, for HotCues, Stems, ,Effects and for many more other reassons.
I was wondering to find a way of bringing pads to that common club consolle configuration.

and it seems to be a pretty fly solution.

I am only concerned about how to set it up and how to use this set up in combination with another DJ (a Club DJ which doesnt use pads).

First of all is there a minimum feature which the mixer should have?
For instance two usb ports or something like that.
Furthermore will the hardware work seamlessly when we switch between DJs?



Any help is really appreciated.

There's no additional requirements on the mixer, and switching between dj's is the same as if the pads controller was not there.

So I should buy a USB hub too and attach the Pad Controller to the USB hub?
Any suggestions for the best USB Hub to buy?
But then how I configure it to be assigned to my decks and mixer?

If your laptop doesn't have enough USB ports you should get a USB hub yes.
Assigning decks should work automatically, but if you need something different than what's done automatically, you can configure it from options->controllers

Just a small add here


  • The connection case you highlighted (using the mixer purely as an analog audio mixer) is a last resort connection case
    It's the hardest to provide for easy takovers because each CDJ is providing audio to the mixer and you'll have to disconnect CDJs one at a time (non-audible deck first, incoming DJ start playing from that CDJ and fully crossfade over, then connect the final CDJ over, making sure you select the right deck for control each time).

    In this way you also lose the ability to do Advanced EQ modes as the Mixer is not connected via USB and communicating with your computer.
    If you are in control of the complete setup, I'd avoid this one and do ome of the other two.
  • In the better/best cases the setup of the connection of the CDJs and Mixer is normally already done by the club and it's either

    - An all Pro DJ Link setup


    This is the easiest to switch over (VirtualDJ allows Pro DJ Link to do the deck assignment and now reconfiguration of CDJ connections are needed... just USB computer selector shift on the mixer and possible deck reassignment)

    - A USB hub setup


    This one is less convenient/possibly trickier , and how convient highly depends on how you do the USB connections - This is because each device is connected/detected separately via USB to the computer it controls and also configured there too. You'll have to switch the USB connections or each CDJ between computers here. The diagram suggests to connect everything to a USB hub that connects to the computer, but I (personally) think (given you have enough ports) it's better to connect the CDJs to their own hub, then to the computer, and connect the Mixer directly to the computer via one of its computer selector ports. In that way, during switch over, the incoming DJ can plug the other Mixer port to the available USB connector port, switch it over and start playing (using the keyboard controls or otherwise, and when the outgoing DJ is done, they just unplug the USB hub containing the CDJs from their computer and plug it in to yours, then you configure deck assignment and start playing with them.
  • There is also a third case that is only possible for the CDJs that still have CD playing ability easier for DJ transitions, but you lose HID mode functionality via the CDJs - having them play a timecode tone from CDJ. Here you just switch the USB connector and treat them as timecode players (no reconnection needed otherwise). You'll probably have to setup for timecode signal recognition in the Audio tab for this too.


Your pad controller (DDJ-XP2 is a good choice) always stays USB connected, directly to your computer if possible in all cases.
