hi all
do you know where the playheads positions are stored?
i use to work to poi etc at my desktop pc, then i transfer all* to my notebook, but it seems that once all* have been transferred, playheads positions aren't the same
can anyone help me?
thanks in advance

*when saying 'all' i mean:
- songs db (vdjstem included)
- 'virtualDj' folder from the same unit of the songs
- vdj db exported from within the sw on my pc [then imported from within the sw on my notebook]

All the POI data are stored among all other critical library data, inside the database.xml file.
This file can be found on several locations, and each one contains unique contents (files are not interchangeable)
1. One database.xml file exists inside "VirtualDJ home" directory, and it contains information (and POI) for all media files located on your system drive (for Windows, that's usually drive C).
2. Then each internal or external drive (or USB drive / stick e.t.c.) has it's own database.xml file inside the VirtualDJ folder in the root of the drive (e.g. D:\VirtualDJ\database.xml). This database.xml file contains information (and POI) for all media files located on that particular drive.
SO:
The complete "VirtualDJ database" is the combination of all the database.xml files that are present on a system at any given time.
As I said, these files are not interchangeable.
When you use VirtualDJ browser to perform file operations (copy/move files) then VirtualDJ automatically updates the database files as it needs.
Therefore, the best way to get files from one computer to another, is to use the VirtualDJ browser to do any necessary file operations.

thanks for this
However, i just tried to copy - from within vdj browser - to another unit.
Now i notice that:
a. the copy only copies mp3, not the related vdjstems
b. after the copy, all the mp3 loose their own specific original path
c. in the destination unit, no 'virtualDj' folder exists till i access to the destination unit
is that normal?
-
which would be the best practice you suggest me to exactly mirror from desktop to notebook?
thanks for your time

The best option for you would be to use an external HDD.
This way all the information is stored on the external drive itself, and therefore both Desktop and Netbook computers can read the same files.
Other ways (for copying files back and forth) do exist, but they make this situation more comlicated

hi
actually my situation is as you just described
my desktop has windows10 installed, so the notebook does;
my desktop has vdj 21 installed, so the notebook does;
my desktop reads all mp3/vdjstems from an external drive (R:\), so the notebook does - same folders tree
the only difference between desktop and laptop is the windows login user

Then you should NOT mess with database and VirtualDJ folders at all.
Just set things on one computer, unplug the disc, and plug it on the other.
All hotcues should carry over.

oh
that's what i do, but sometime it s not enough grr
hotcues are at the right place, the issue - the one i wrote here for - is about playhead position...
-
what if install vdj directly on the external drive?

All you need to do is either:
Use something like Synchredible to sync your music and VirtualDJ home folder between machines
Or:
As George suggests keep everything on an external HDD/SSD
This works for everyone else. No need to install the VDJ program anywhere else.

I think you need to clarify what you mean by playhead position.
