i had the same thought until i read in some other boards that amd is not as stable as pentium-d and is not made as durable as p-d plus it supposibly gets hotter than p-d

Hmm.. isn't the AMD Athlon 64 X2 only that has dual core... There is a difference and I'd choose AMD aswell.

Well a lot of AMD users here... Everyone knows that I find a better choice with Intel. You recommend what you know, I try both. I find more advantages in Intel than in AMD. The only thing AMD is better is in power consumtion and cheaper in some cases. The AMD X2 has a higher price than Intel Dual Core processors. The memory works in DDR2 667 in Intel, and AMD only DDR400.

I go for Intel with an Intel motherboard, use a 955 or 945. You got more performance with that.

Dual-Core an Hypertreading is the fastest way to do things. In that case AMD is slower.

AMD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103547
INTEL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116227

AMD is clearly the best when using a single application and can save us a few buck at the end of the year because the power consumption.

Intel is better if use several applications running in your system.

For dual-core processors, INTEL is CHEAPER than AMD. $537 (Pentium D840) vs $690 (X2 4600+).

The only exception is The Extreme Edition from Intel (840EE) vs AMD X2 4800+, which is like a 4 processor because his HT and Dual Processor Core vs a AMD Dual Core.

Before you get a shuttle box, check this out http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=15130. I thought about a Shuttle, but at the time, they ony had a 250 watt power supply. This has 300 watt. I have 3 harddrives in it, a 60g for programs, and 2 120g for music. You can't get that in a shuttle. I just added a 200g external for my DVDs, and have another one ready when that gets full. It is a little bigger, but so what. I carry it in a padded roller bag made for 12" vinyl. I have a harness from Geargrip.com, to pick it up. Plus you don't have to use Shuttle parts. It also looks great, with the blue lights on the front. Also their customer service was great. One of the lights went out, and they sent me the whole front plate, no questions, after a year. This was my first build, and I have learned a lot since then. I plan on building another one, but with a different MB. It will be Intel, of course.

WARNING (just read this) :
"A reason to stay away from Intel chips in the future? Intel's latest chipset adds support for Microsoft's DRM format on a hardware level. Intel is not giving out any details, probably because they tried to sneak that one in without anyone noticing. As you may have heard, the software DRM can be circumvented (only if you have a valid license for the content though), but hardware is most likely going to be quite a bit tougher to get around"

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/Old_news/may05.htm

This is enough reason for me to stay away from Intel, not because i'm not legal, but because i don't want anyone to control my computer...
This is already used on the Pentium D chips...

Apopsis, I feel is tendentious information, and not say all the true.

Did you know about the serial number issue in the PIII processor chip?, everyone disable and that's it. NOBODY USES that information ever, like some people aware in the early days of PIII.

This is the same issue... Come on, nobody can control your computer without your permission, its illegal and it will not be permitted. It Will Never Be happent as You described.

Do you remember how users reacted whith this, they forced Intel and motherboard manufacturers to update bios with a disable option for the P3 serial number...
This time it is more "quietly" Intel does not give many informations,
PS. the comments are not mine, but quotes from the websites.
I started a new post about this, whith more informations, we can discuss there.

As for this thread, I just added one more reason for someone to choose the (cheaper) Amd64
