some old Jamo is great.. (not more than 5 yrs old...) low price and nice sound... but I'm talking about small speakers (15")

If you search stores like guitar center, sam ash, etc. you might get lucky and find a nice used set of speakers in good condition at a very reasonable price. Cosmetic flaws can be a DIY repair. I picked up a pair of 3-way klipsch pros 500W rms a few years ago for $50/each. I rebuilt the crossover and recovered the speakers for under $100.
