Personnaly I prefer DivX, gives a decent quality and keeps the file sizes down. Also never had a problem with VDJ playing DivX files. Various tools available for ripping direct to DivX, ie "DrDivX" or "Imtoo dvd ripper"

Yes, divx has a good qulity and not too much space, nevertheless when I load one video into the decks,VDJ takes more time to load it (more than mpg1 or mpg2 ) I don't know why, because I ripp one divx file with the same size of mpg files and the results are the same mpg1 takes less time to open in VDJ

Hey Tophouse, thanks for mentioning ImTOO, I've been using a decrypter and virtualdub for ages - it's complicated and time consuming! Just tried that program you suggested, big improvement! Normally takes me about 8 hours to DIVX a promo only disc, ImTOO did it in 2... result!

If you have the hard drive space, rip to vob. No loss of quality, loads quickly, and it only takes about 7 minutes for a promoonly disc.

You're welcome :o) The thing about imtoo is it's nice and easy, it's definitely fast, and setting up profiles is easy, ie predetermine divx quality and bitrate of mp3 audio track etc, for videos I just use 192 k at 44100 stereo and it sounds fine. I set video bitrate at highest it will go (1200) results are pretty good.

The best for Quality and Performance both audio and video is mpeg2 with audio @ 44.1 KHz LPCM (MP2).

You can rename the .vob's to .mpg and voila, you've got an mpeg2... you can use ImToo to change the sample rate of the audio from 48 KHz or AC3.... only problem I have is sometimes with ImToo... I get the videos out of synch.

I'm trying to find the best setting for this.

another program that is also good for changing audio without losing quality on video is MPEG video wizard you can change ac3 audio to lpcm or viceversa.

"MPEG Video Wizard" by Womble... I use the MPEG VCR from time to time... it is very easy, but slow. But I'm willing to try it again. Looks like they upgraded it.

The thing to think about is whether your going to project the video's or not.
If you are not planning on using a projector, then avi and mpeg are fine.
For projecting though, it tends to "pixelate" the video when you stretch it for the big screen.
Since you lose almost nothing in quality, I have had to re-rip a lot of them to vob.

I don't think that MPEG video wizard is slow , in my pc it takes less than a min to change the audio format or to cut some parts of the video.

I have 3 recomendations for do video ripping:
<
1.- The fast option is to use smartripper and get VOB files.

2.- The optimized option is to use DivX and save your files in that way, I also let you know that with DivX 6 ($20 usd) you get a smallest file without sacrifice your Video resolution (DVD Quality) at all (almost 8 times smaller than MPEG-2 DVD quality Videos).

3.- The Good sound and Video option is MPEG-2 with 44KHz audio section. You have great video and awesome audio also.

Good Luck!

Removing DRM protection from files is illegal.

Discussion of illegal activities is not permitted.

If you want DRM-free content, please purchase it from a supplier that does not use DRM protection (E.g: DJ service.)

Also, with the exception of the other reply above, this is an ancient topic from 2006.
