When I hook my laptop up to any mixer with a Y cable the volume is always very low compared to the volume coming from the CD mixers and when I turn up the master volume on the mixer the bass and stuff sounds very nasty. What can I do to fix this problem?

Did you check your windows volume setting in control panel/sound (speaker in tool bar)
Look for a control panel for your sound card specific and see if the volume is down.

i have the same problem
I use vdj with laptop and rodec mixer.
also use the Y splitter to change with real vinyl. but the sound quality of vdj is very bad when you compare it with the real vinyl.
when you have a 4-channel mixer you can put the cd players on another line and put the gain up.
(but that is not a solution for the sound qualtiy)
