HI,

Below is the LAPTOP system that I am considering purchasing to be used with VDJ 4.0 Pro to DJ video and audio at my clubs.

I hope it is great in all areas so as to hopefully run a successful night straight through of DJing video (and audio) at the clubs.

An external sound card has not been chosen yet, and if you could make a recommendation that would be appreciated. Thanks.

Don't do it! Go for a shuttle pc instead, laptops have too many issues with video. Shuttle with be cheaper and better for you in the long run.

Wait!
I put this together with all of the many recommendations from the boards (many coming from you).

What is a "shuttle PC?"

What could go wrong with the above system?

Thank you.

@hoffman

You said the magic word tho, video. First thing you have to decide is how serious you want to be about doing video. I take it that you will play alot more video then audio from you above post. Also being that I do support for the website I can tell you from experince that no one has anything good to say about the nvidia laptop video cards no matter how fast they say they are. Personally I would never risk a video show on a laptop pc, but thats just me. If you must stick with a laptop to playback video, everyone says (although I've not persoanlly tested) the ati laptop cards are far better.

Shuttle pcs are small form factor pc's very portable. The good thing about them is they use off the shelf full size pc drives and more importantly a full size video card. The shuttle will end up costing you thousands less and give you far better performace that any laptop could hope for. Here is a link to the shuttle I recommend.

just upgrade the powersupply in it to the 350 and your golden.

First, thank you for spending your time to respond and help out.

I did get the strong impression that more people had succes with ATI cards than Nvidea, and when I called Gateway today to actually find the correct laptop with an ATI card... well you can see my result after 3 hours.

So lets say I put something together like the above with the best possible ATI card- you still are against it?

Also.. this may be a tough one, but is there is a single person who does do video (50%), audio 50% on a LAPTOP that can say they are successful night after night?

Maybe you know someone personally here or otherwise?

I'd love to talk with that person if there is such a person.

Thanks!

"6600GT is what the dev team has in their boxes (agp) I have the pcix version we did the expo with perfect results. I really dont like ati too much junk in their drivers."

Can you clarify please...quiet confused.

I was talking about regular desktop video cards. Also ati recently switched to .net dependent drivers (yuck) However the omega drivers are out there and far better in my opinnion. I strongly recomend you rethink your laptop position, but if you must I hear the x1400 is working quite well. I switched from ati to nvida when 3.0 came out and never looked at ati again (until recently) because of the laptop card's issue and nvidia. So my position based entirely on support and these boards.

Laptops ati
Desktops nvida

You have to admit its tempting to have a super fast system for less the 900 with a 19 in montior isn't it. :)

It means they used desktop computers with Nvidia cards not a laptop ;) . ATI have bad drivers forever, but seems that their cards work better in laptops for video use in VDJ. Stay tuned, more video guru's gonna help you with this.
P.S. Lol Cyder, we were posting at the same time ;)

A duel core Intel Laptop with 2 giga ram, will work fine :)
If possible, get an ATI card instead....

Ati X1400 works great for video mixing on laptops. Just make sure you get a REAL ATI X release, and not some light version, with less ram etc. I have a REAL ATI X 700 and that even works great for video mixing

DO NOT GET NVIDIA 7400 or 7500 go series for laptops!!!

Cyder is right about desktops working better than laptops (Generally speaking), and shuttle is a small desktop.

But many want a portable laptop, and so have I......
And the specs for your laptop seems great.

Nr1 problem with laptops seems to be that many use ligth versions of hardware, cheap chipsets etc.
But go for a power built laptop - and not for one of those cheap deals.

I use laptop for gigs 2-3 nites a week, no isses ;)

lol i just get new laptop with this graphic card. I tought that i bought laptop just for audio. It works with video too? wow didn't try yet, but i will :D

i am surprised, because the best card is X1800 :)))) SO maybe i won't need desktop computer to mix videos.. interesting :)))

Ok its not secret laptops aren't my first love ;)

Lets look as this a diffent way.

Lets take your standard off the self laptop with this special x1400 video card

1800 - 2600

now lets add a external sound card 100-200

now some external hard drives 300-400

oem o/s 200

See how quickly your laptop can become less portable and a mess of cables running to it. Don't forget the ground loop adapter as well. By the time you hook up all your externals to this and that to get the laptop to fuction you may as well have a desktop. Count on a good 2 years of use maybe then throw it away and start the cycle again. Aslo don't foget what happens if your laptop decides one day it doesn't like your usb harddrive anymore.

Now for the shuttle

While you don't have the abilty to have intergrated keyboard and mouse you do have the benifit of internal drives sata drives and sound card, rember most shuttles have a great built in asio soundcard if its got the nforce 4 chipset. Also you can change processors ram and video cards as technology advances. And the piece of mind not having to worry about usb flaking out on you is priceless.

Just take a hard look at what you are doing before you make the leap. Again laptops are great for audio but be warned about doing video with one.

Well I did what is mentioned above and it works every time, check my blog.
Small enough to put into a small odyssey box too, tight but fits without compromise.
At a fraction of the cost too, and easy to build also.

Are you reading this Tommy........

True, a shuttle have its advantages for sure.... Specially when it comes to upgrading hardware somewhere down the line :)

Buttom line is that of course a shuttle is a better PC... but many of us just want a laptop, regardless of the benefits of a desktop :)

But true, you are more likely to run into issues with video mixing with laptops, although I'd say again that ATI laptop cards works...

But be carefull... Laptop grahic cards are not the same as dekstop ones. Even if the name sound simlar.
ATI X700 and ATI X700 mobile is not the same card ;)

Whats the difference? Well Cyder already said... It works better in desktops ;)

And even then there are comfusions too... ATI X700 is not the same as ATI X700 PRO.

Get a GOOD card, and your fine, and stay away from those giving you "light versions" of it.. often called LE.

Get real deal, and not some cheap lightversion version of webshop ;)

I use a Dell 810 and mix 50-60% music videos with no problems (v4.0) but I do get the whole shuttle idea. Right now I have one external drive & a small video box connected that the 2nd display goes to (from there it goes to another lcd & 2 video outputs) and the dac-2. lots of wires !
Excellent product Team - Thanks.
