Apologies if this is posted elsewhere but a search of the forums didn't show up anything obvious.
What I want to know is can VDJ automatically set the volume of songs to the same level regardless of volume level the mp3 files were ripped at.
I use the auto gain feature and set my gain to -2.0 which works fine but I still think there is a perceptible volume difference on some songs and I don't believe this functionality is actually designed for what I want so perhaps there's another setting I am unaware of.

There is "Always 0dB" option in Version 4 but it needs some fixing, not working all the time :).

I use the "Always 0db, and it works for me. You could try the "Always Match", just make sure you start with a volume you like.

How did you "set it at -2.0"?

Does the always match feature actually match the volume, or just keep the sliders in the same place?

It will match the volume of the first trax you play, and match everything to that. Give it a try, and see.

I have it on "Always 0dB" and don't have too many problems, but I always check the mixer first. sometimes it still needs altering, but normally by not very much.

I think the Auto Gain is showing its age to be honest, It's not up to the standard of the BPM engine for example. If I record a mix using "Auto Gain enabled" at say -4db, open the wave file in an editor I can see huge volume fluctuation, and of course I notice this when mixing, it's not such an issue in clubs where adjustments can be made live, but when recording (for Demo discs etc) you want things to be more subtle and smooth, not making large clumsy adjustments at the gain.
It does depend on whether you normalise your tracks or not, and I don't, neither do I intent to, I hope the quality of this very useful feature is improved. It also depends on where you get your tracks from, if you use the same website for most of your stuff, then the chances are that auto Gain seems to be working well for you. But I buy music from a great range of sources and each track seems to have a different 'natural' volume.

How did you "set it at -2.0"?
The knob marked gain [not being a smart a$$] is used to change the gain level.
You can use the mouse to change the level.
At least that's the way I seem to be ablt to change it. But I usually leave it at odb.

sorry for taking a year to reply to this but I only found the topic now using the new search facility!
The message [set it at -2.0 and have "always match" enabled] was applicable to the home edition of VDJ and not Pro version.

Vdj normalizes at 0db point blank, not 0db RMS. it used to in the previous versions (when you had for example 1.0 on deck 1 and -2.0 on the other) for that example, the numbers of db didnt match, but the RMS did (at some point). that's why you had a limiter. So if 0 db doesnt give you the same sound pressure on both decks, you can always add a few dbs until you feel its right, i wont distort. it will go back to 0.0 when you load a new song anway.
