VDJ Crashes and Video's are slow and choppy when the 2nd deck is activated and I transition between decks. I'm trying to find out the cause but so far no luck. Can anyone or the developers tell me if VDJ uses the video card to generate video's or does it directly access the computers CPU and Main Ram?
My laptop is an Alienware Pentium 4 3.2 Gig processor with 1 Gig of ram and an ATI mobility 9600 video card with 128 megs of on board memory. My soundcard is the AG Gigaport and I use the Dac 2 controller and the latest release of VDJ (5.6). My files are stored on several Western Digital 500 Gig USB2 drives that spin at 7200RPM and formatted as Fat32.
Please note that my processor is not a pentium M. It is basically a desktop computer crammed into a laptop. When I am working with video files, the computer gets hot enough to cook an egg on it. I have a laptop aluminum cooler plate with dual fans, but the computer is roasting. This only happens when using video files. When I'm just DJing with MP3 files, the system works perfect and stays cool. I have all my video files as .VOB for the highest possible quality.
I have direct X 9 installed as I use Windows XP Professional and I have updated all my drivers for the video card and computer componenets. There are many other users who have similar specs to my machine or even less powerful machines, that say they have no problem mixing VOB files.
My cousing, who is a Novell and Microsoft certified IT guy and also builds computers and servers for a living, said my computer has a motherboard that has a lousy South side Bus. I don't know if that is the problem, but I'm trying to determine where my problem exists.
I noticed today on the site, the listed minimum requirements for mixing video are a dual core processor with 2 gig of ram and a dual output video card with 1 gig of ram. Again, there are guys with much less powerful machine's than mine that have no problem mixing VOB files. Also, the first video card with 1 gig of ram just came out 4 days ago. Before that, a 1 gig video card was not available. The card is for a desktop only. The highest memory on a video card for a laptop is 256MB or 512MNB, so why does the site state a component that is not available yet to the general public?

Sorry to hear you are still having problems. You do not need a video card with 1g of ram. I have not seen the spec sheet, but believe it could be a typo. I have a desktop I use everyday with P4 3.0, 1g of ram, nVidia 6600 w 128mb video card, 3 internal and 2 external drives. I run video 7 hours a day. I wish you had kept this with your other thread, because now I don't remember everything you did. I will have to look it up, to refresh my memory. Have you tested to see if your system ram is working properly? I don't remember if you have this problem with or without hardware acceleration.
As to your question, I am not sure. I believe VDJ uses both. The file is loaded to ram, but the video card has to render to two screens, and the CPU is called on to run all this. I'm sure someone smarter, can explain this better. Either way, how does this impact your problem, what difference will it make for you?

I have the same problem with the check box for hardware accelerated turned on and off. No difference, still slow, choppy transitions. The reason I asked what VDJ uses is that If it uses the main ram and CPU instead of the video card, then I'll double the main ram to 2 gig. But you have only 1 gig of ram and you say you have no problems.
Let me ask, what format are your video files in. Are they VOB, MPEG1, Mepg4, Divx? I'm using only VOB to get the highest quality as I use 10 ft projectors and large plasma screens when I VJ, so the bigger the picture, the more you see the imperfections, thus the need for the highest quality, uncompressed files.
I'm wondering if my cousin was right about the motherboards south bus being too slow. Maybe that's causing the problem, or maybe my video card. Only when 2 video's are playing does the problem arise. It's as if the computer is working overtime to try and keep up with the processes. With the specs on my machine though, that shouldm't be the case.

OK, just re-read previous thread. Did you go back to 4.3 to see if you still had this problem? Did you try a fresh full install of 5.6? Who makes that south bridge chip? If you can afford it, go for the extra ram anyway, it can't hurt. You can't judge by my machine, as you can tell, they all react differently. The new machine I am building will have 2 gig of ram, as does my Vista laptop.
By the way, did you piss the big boys off or something? Because we could use some more help here. I know my limits, and I am reaching them. I will try to at least keep the light on your issue.
Also, can we get a mod to merge this with the previous thread?

I did go back to 4.3 but got the same results. I re-installed 5.6 and still the same. I'm not sure who makes the bridge, I'd have to dig out the paperwork that came with the computer. I don't think I did anything to piss anyone off. It would be nice though if Cstoll or DJinNorway chimed in as those two really seem to know what they are doing.

i'll keep it real simple.
upgrade to Vista.
upgrade to Vista.

Vista is not an upgrade. People are going back to XP in droves because Vista is a resource hog and causes more problems than it;'s worth. Besides, the video being choppy would not be a factor of the operating system, It's most likely a problem with the south bridge on my particular motherboard as the rest of my specs fall in line with many other users who are having no problems with video and XP Pro.

Sir I have to disagree, on some systems Vista actually improves video and audio. I just built a system and didnt like my output quality, then upgraded to Vista and Smooth As Butta:) You should however make sure you have at least 2gb ram and that all the drivers you need are Vista compatible:) Happy Holidays

Don't believe all the crying about Vista. If you look around here, you will see some happy Vista users.

i've been playing videos for the last 4 years 3 days a week 6 hours nonstop. several problems since version VDJ 2 (lot of history behind :) ). I used to have an acceptable performance with VDJ 4.3 and XP (my old laptop). I even could play my video sessions while broadcasting audio on radio.
Now i changed to a very powerful laptop (more than ever, i use to change it once a year) but Vista and VDJ5.06 desperates me. Impossible to make a session without a crash or freeze. Impossible to play a video if broadcasting on radio. I've read through several forums to optimize my machine, vista forums, nvidia aswell, but still have problems. I know the team is doing a very good effort to solve this so ill wait for it. I wish it will be soon (i dont enjoy my sessions this way with such unstable system).
PS. Please, please, please, optimize Turbocache use!!
SYSTEM: Acer 5920G T7500 2.2Ghz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB, 2GB Ram + 1Gb Intel Turbo Board Memory, Nvidia 8600GT 512Mb dedicated (up to 1.2Gb with Turbocache), 250Gb HDD, Vista Home Premium

upgrade meaning wipe your system & install vista.
Choppy video fix...YES! I know this from first hand. I wasn't able to use video with my mbp until i ugraded to vista. After time I don't care how clean you keep your system....its gets twisted after time.

man i dunno why your having problems. Well if you feel confident you did everything right....then i dunno. But if i were in your shoes I would wipe your harddrive CLEAN...reformat vista again....make sure when u setup to NOT do Fast NTFS Format.
Good Luck
btw what sound card are you using?

Installation is on Brand New Laptop so its not a dirt hard drive problem...
The problem is that VDJ does not support Turbocache and Turbocache cannot be turned off in Vista.
For XP users, turbocache can be turned off just changing a line at windows registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lVideoGUID000] "RMDisableRenderToSysmem"=hex:01,00,00,00
this is made also by using rivatuner

have you tried looking for a modded driver that will allow you to turn turbo off?
theres alot of gamers out there that do some crazy mods to drivers & control panels. This is how i found out how to finally use my 2nd monitor output on my bootcamp/vista system

im still trying forcewares...but no success. I hope rivatuner team develops soon a new version capable to disable turbocache on vista
