I only really need about 100 gig of space for my music collection and i have a 160 gig hd in my laptop, the only thing it is used for is vdj, what am i better doing, putting it on the laptop drive so there is less conections set up time etc, or is there any advantage to going external??? I've had a read about the forum and only real argument i see is for space with the external being better

one thing to remember is to always have a back up so in that case having a external for that is a great thing to have just incase you ever have to reformat

I have 2 internal and 2 external.. The externals have a delay of about 2 seconds (appears to be in sleep mode when this happens).... They are Seagate's (ST3250824U2-RK) - as I say, the delay could be a Seagate issue..........
Because of this, my advice is to use internals for a proper gig

all my music is backed up, it`s on another 3 drives (i`m not paranoid honest) was just making sure that there was no reason performance wise or reliability wise to not use the hd in the laptop.

Internal

I use a firewire external. It seems that the drive doesn't become quite as fragmented as the internal did, considering that, on the internal, music was sharing real estate with apps and their associated data files, etc.

I use separate drives for programs, and separate drives for media. I don't want my hard drive running my programs, and trying to find and play media at the same time. It can do it, but why make it work harder than it has to? I don't know anything mechanical that last longer, by working harder.

I'm the same as AMAHM above, but in addition to what he said, remember that Windows is likely to use your internal drive as a Paging File also. Making your hard drive work more than it would have to than with an external drive attached.
