Hi gang, I'm starting to look for a new laptop. No problems with my Dell, but was looking at Acer also. They're not a big name in U.S. and was wondering if anyone on here uses one. How's the reliabiltiy, tech support etc... Thanks

They are a very good make and popular here in the UK,
I was looking at the range when I was deciding a Laptop, but I choose Toshiba instead. My friend has one, don't know which model though. He has had his for about 7-8 months now and he has not had a problem with his. He uses his for photo and home video editing.

I used to repair laptops years ago and was in the IT field of varied capacity for 14 years. I used to swear by Dell and Toshiba. It seems as though Dell has gotten too big for their britches though and charge too much for what you get.
I started buying ACER LCD's for my desktops about 4 years ago, their pricepoints / size monitor have been outstanding. I've purchased 6 flat panels from them and out of all of them, only had one dead pixel. None of them have failed yet. To be honest, i would consider Acer when I go to buy my next laptop. They give great value and quality on everything else i've gotten from them.

Using an Acer Aspire 5520G atm. Great laptop, no problem at all. I also got a older Acer laptop Aspire 3000, which is some huge crap.
1 year ago I would recommend you not to go Acer, but now after some upgrades on their possessor fans and a great design (from bmw i think) i would say GO FOR ACER!
But you should get one with Intel and ATI..... I don't like nVidia when mixing video, and AMD is not as stable as it were
Sorry for my bad English, but i hope you get the point :D
-Cheers! (Yes, buy acer!)

I have a year old acer aspire 9410 with the intel gma950 (224 mb) integrated/shared video card, 17inch widescreen monitor, 120gb hard drive, 2gb ram, dual core 1.6gb processor, webcam, dL dvd burner, card reader, vga & svideo outputs .. I purchased mine used for $475 from a friend about 8 months ago, it listed for about $800 new. It came with xp media center installed which wouldnt work with my Numark Total Control due to usb audio drivers I was told. After installing XP Pro & Black XP the machine would freeze/stutter with video play. I installed Vista ultimate & reduced the ram to 1.5gb & its running like a champ. It seems to me that the operating system may affect how stable the program performs. Even though xP should use less cpu/resources than vista, in my experience Vista processes video better (drivers or codecs??). I am running TCV, Numark total control, maya 44, technique 1200's, external monitors with a video amp/splitter.. I also have a gateway MA7 or MT6705 notebook with the same specs that also runs video well..

I work in I.T. and have done for 10 years now.
I often get asked, what is better, Dell or HP or IBM or This or that?
I would say in the world of IT, when it comes to PC and Notebooks, you really need to judge each and every model on its own merits.
It really all boils down to the components. Motherboard, CPU, GPU, Ram, Hard Drive..etc.
Its up to the Computer or Notebook manufacturer which components they want to buy & use in their particular models. They don't always stick to the same brand of components.
I would say the only way you could generalise about a PC or Notebook manufacturers, is maybe when it comes to the Housing of the components (The shell of the notebook or Desktop). For example IBM have a good repuation for the solid and robust nature of their Thinkpad range, howver you can easily find the same internal components in other notebooks which wouldn't get such good reviews.
The other element where a Notebook or Desktop manufacturer can be generalised would be their attitude to Warranty and Support.
When it comes to Notebooks, i would always recommend going for a well known name (Not some generic brand), purely because sourcing parts like keyboards and stuff will be much easier.
Ultimately, you need to look past the name, research the components, and then judge how well the components have been packaged together by the PC or Notebook manufacturer. Also factor in Warranty & Support reputation, included software bundle.... oh and the price !!
