please note .. last week someone here asked who used promo only.. I recieved a letter on promo only subscription is not transferable to virtual dj.. It only allowed to be use in its original format.. the change of the songs to a digial format is against the the lease agreement that is not covered by the license agreement that we filled out... So last week we went out and bought as much music as posible to cover our ass.. Now that we own originals and payed the avla cost for digital format we are clear to continue .. just one thought the music loaded by zip dj was covered along with the collection of music we have gotten from record pool... just keep a note about this .. this includes the promo only videos.. and also know that all itune video transfers are illeagle under the original contract.. cover your ass.... Anyone want to add to this subject please make sure that they are able to cover there ass..

In America, we do what we want, and don't care about no stinking rules. I have so many subscriptions, that if any of them pucks with me, I will cancel them, and just buy from their competitors, and remind them that I was a DJ before they were in business. I have always paid for my music, and will continue to do so, with or without them.

Now u kinda got me worried. Whats the possibility that someone will actually come up to you during a gig and be like "Hey, where did you get those?"

A club owner once told me, do what what you want. If we get in trouble, we'll deal with the problem later. After a couple bikini contests, we had to go to court, but they were never worried about where the music or videos were coming from. I have been using PromoOnly since mid 90's.

AVLA licencing - regular or Digital, Doesn't cover video anyway stretch.
That's a different licence.
It's also a load of bullshit. But necessary for business.
True Story: When I was working at the Purple Onion I only had 1 Guy come in 5 five years to check on legal music.
Make sure you have legal music on your harddrive and a digital licence.
and check your PM.

Here in Phoenix they rarely check Dj's music or video but "Sound Choice" was ALL OVER the karaoke guys (course I never met one yet that actually buys his discs or songs legit) and they gave cease and desist orders to more then 40 operators in the metro area about a year ago....one operator actually had to pay for their entire catalog several times over and a huge fine for fraud because he was actually SELLING bootleg hard drives pre loaded with music to other bars and they even went so far as to FAKE certificates they gave with the hard drives saying the music was legal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there's an easy way to cover your ass . Put your legal music in a hard disk - put the non legal music in another hard disk and use a software to encript data ..like DriveCrypt - is somebody comes ..just press control+F12 and the "ilegal" disk is gone - I tried to have all my collection "legally" but it's imposible to have all -

I've been checked on about 6 times in the last 14 years buy people from PRS doing random visits. You do need to have a digital DJ license in the UK and there are limitations to the amount of music and video you can store on your hard drive.
If you don't have the license, you are breaking the law. I'm not sure what the penalties are though.
There are some unscrupulous people out there that if they want your gig, they will make a phone call to have you checked in the hope you don't have a license (its happened to me but I had my license so it didn't work)
Venues have to be licensed to play video.

Like someone else posted, this isnt done much in the US. We are the ones helping the companies promote their artist which results in Itunes downloads. I did remember SOund CHoice was offering rewards for people to turn people in. You cant blame them, they are trying to protect their investment. We as DJ's make money for our skills, if it wasnt for the music, we wouldnt have jobs. So need to support those that support you.

The problem is the way the law is written (in the US anyway). I don't think anyone here is condonning pirating; however, the digital caopyright ast makes it illegal to even rip your dvd to your drive (even it you own/license the dvd), you CAN NOT make a backup copy for personal use (I belive cd's you can but DVD's are additionally protected by the motion picture laws and they CAN NOT be copied even for personal use). It is also illegal to alter the content in anyway and save it (which means all of our extended mixes, remixes, mash ups, etc. are illegal AS SOON AS WE SAVE THEM TO hard drive or disc)..........and to further complicate matters the videos come out all over the internet sites, bet, vhi and mtv sometimes 3-4 months before we can "legally" aquire them form promo or jones or rock america, etc. How can the labels expect us to do our job (and promote their product) when the songs are often dead and buried before we can "legally" aquire them.............I don't think any of us want to be illegal, but to survive and make a living sometimes you have to make a moral judgement that may be opposed to the letter of the law.........laws are for scumbags, morals are for honest citizens, greed is for the corporations!

the fine in alberta for one club was over 30 000 for the content and I know a few who have had avla visit them here in manitoba at least 4 time.. I am purchasing all the the music on top of promo only as well as all the original videos from the pawn shop.. This crap has to stop, I understand artists need money for there work but if im alread paying the fee regaurdless whats the issue.. I also think that after being a dj for 22 yeas ( Not a newbie) it would be come more relax but instead im running out of room.. Thank god for zipdj , content that is 100% leagle here.. Marcel did you hear about the massive fine to the p dj , his fine was in the hundered of thousands...

different countries, different laws.
after an involved phone call to promo only subscriptions last year ( and i think i posted this previously in another thread about promo only) i was told that they had no problem with the cd's and DVD's being ripped into digital storage as long as it didnt leave the building. we're paying for the "privelige" of promoting new music for them and the industry. so if everyone has to give their music back because they say so, then they won't be making any money because no one will shell out money for something that they can pull back on a whim.
so tell 'em to take off eh?
