A lot of users reported problems with nVidia cards and they need additional tweaking before it will work with VDJ. I think this laptop is not overkill. Try to get faster spinning hard drive as this affects video loading time.

Hello,
search this forum for FREEZING.
You will see a lott of topics about this.
A lott of them are mine.
Best advise I can give: It´s not only the videocard but also together with the other components.
Try before you buy is my advise or buy!!!
If you read on this forum that people don´t have problems, buy exactly the same laptop, not only the videocard !!!

One thing the description didn't mention is what kind of video outs it has. Most clubs (at least ones I've been to) are only set up to receive an S-video signal. Some clubs with newer setups will also accept HDMI. If the lappy only has VGA out, you'll also have to get a converter of some sort.
Beyond that, from a technical standpoint it should run video just fine. My lappy only has 256MB of video, but it seems to work just fine. However, the longest video set I've done was only about 90 minutes. But, it was hiccup free, using S-Video and VGA out.

There are people who have a onboard intel 950 videocard with just 128 mb memory and it runs perfect.
Or have a look at my topic for more info:

I don't think the 7xxx-series have the same issues.. A much better GPU overall according to specs and comparisons, that are better than the 8xxx-series, which would seem kinda strange, but that's a fact. The 7xxx-seriers are also bigger, they only fit notebooks with 17" sized screens. Check for more info: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html (ranked as No.5, which is alsmost the best you can get, compared to the common 8600M GT gpu ranked No. 28..)
The 7xxx-series don't support directx 10 - 8xxx-series do.
