Hi All,
I am a former Atomix user. I used this about 5 years ago or so.
I am debating on purchasing Virtual DJ but I have run into a few problems..
I live in Canada and subscribe to most of the Promo Only Canada Series. This discs are AVLA licensed but are illegal to copy to a hard drive source. I use another DJ program and I posted this on a DJ board and I recieved a rather threating email from AVLA stating that I must purchase a license to copy my music to hard drive but yet I am not allowed to copy any Promo Only (Leased) music to my hard drive.
I do not purchase store bought cd's.
What are other Users of Virtual DJ doing to get around this? I refuse to go out and buy all new cd's in the store.
There are a ton of DJ's in my area who download cracked copies of various DJ software and get all their music from limewire or similar and go out and play. becuase they have no music costs they can charge next to nothing.
Is there really a legal way for a DJ to use Virtual DJ or similar?

I can not tell you what to do, but I have been a Promo Only member since 93, and have all if not most on hard drives. I don't know what they do in Canada, but I would not worry. I would not take out a full page ad in DJ Times, saying how I am copying all my PO stuff to hard drive.

I'm Canadian as well.
Purchase an AVLA digital License.
http://www.avla2007.ca/
This will allow you to copy your Promo only cd's Onto a SINGLE hard drive (make sure it's a large capacity)
Technically it's still illegal but the governing body that enforces this license - avla - is supplying you with the licese.
It's a case of the law has not changed with technology fast enough. All you can do is purchase a digital license, use avla-approved music sources, then go have fun spinning music.
If you download music from www.podds.ca and export the files to wma format in the player software - it has a avla catalogue number embeded in the filename & id3 tag, this covers you.
zipdj.com does the same thing.

I use Sony Vegas to do some of my own video remixes.
What does this have to do with this post?
Well, when I do a video remix I zoom in for a few seconds just enough to cut out the Artist Name Song and Promo Only (if present), so when I relabel it all looks uniform.
I guess you could theoretically zoom in and cut off the words "Promo Only" on all of your Promo Only videos. It would be on them to prove that it is their videos you have in your hard drive.
Whew, that would be A LOT of work preparing for an unlikely event.
