Ok so I did a search of the forum to see if VDJ could read ipods like they do in Serato and Torq. From what I see apparently you can not do it because of some Apple issues. What I need to know is is this still true? The response I saw was from July 07 so i'm assuming that maybe this has been updated but not addressed.
Also if it is not available. How come? Apparently if two other programs can then its definitely possible and while im not a programmer this does not sound like a difficult feature to add... especially for a company that leads the field in video DJ'ing

what are you hoping to achieve? using the ipod as a drive you can do this with software like copypod.
If you want to mix with an ipod why not get a IDJ2 or ICDX

Hey SKY,
Basically I have two computers one with VDJ and the other that I have to organize my files in itunes. I would like to create custom playlist on the itunes computer for when I have special gigs (i.e. 80s might) and then be able to connect it to my VDJ laptop to access those files. before you respond please consider the following:
1. My itunes laptop is connected to my music hard drive 750GBs of music. I prefer not to create the playlist in the VDJ computer on itunes because it will require too much unplugging and so forth and also loading my music on the VDJ laptop which means when im ready to delete the files I have to be cautious of deleting any permenant files I keep on the laptop for everyday use.
2. I know I could get a portable drive and drag the music files on there to connect to the VDJ laptop but that would just be another expense. Besides I live in NY and on my way to my gigs I take the train so this will allow me to listen to my playlist for songs I might wanna play or make any mental notes since I can access the music without turning on my laptop
3. Last but not least if I can convince the club owner to install VDJ. I can just bring my ipod versus bringing my hard drive : )
FYI - I dont wnt to mix with an IPOD I love VDJ and its features. Basically as I stated I would like to use the Ipod as a drive but being able to access the files without having to put them on twice (i.e the ipod and then as a hard drive file)

Remember the good ole days of actually having to do some of effort of being a DJ....Sorting which albums you were going to take, Lugging, unwinding the wire, sound checking, Selecting songs from 100s of record / CDs, " actually doing the work of playing tunes", breakdowns, lugging, winding the wires and driving.
Todays effort is pull out USB, pull out controller, plug external, " some people actually do the work of playing the tunes ( automix ) ", put everything back in case and drive.
The future is plug IPOD in and leave to get something to eat. Come back when play list is over and get paid, Now the hard part of unpluging IPOD and drive home.
5 years from now is put on metal helmet which plugged into your computer and virtually playsongs from the privacy of you home.

Why not make your playlist on the Ipod and then plug it into your mixer and play from that.I dont know if you are using one but I will assume.
I know VDJ wont be controlling it but it becomes "plug n play" this way.Do you have an extra channel to use on your mixer?
In fact just today I picked up a cord to allow an IPOD or NANNO to be used if by chance a customer should ask if I can plug in.
I seem to be getting that question asked every so often.

I also have a 4 channel mixer which allows me to place a 1/8 plug in for those just in case emergencies.

Ok here is the gist cause i think people are getting confused and/or JUST DONT READ THE WHOLE POST cause in no part did I say I wanted to use my IPOD to DJ with.
The laptop I use has a 60gb hard drive. I only want to keep music on there that will be considered hits and playable 5 years from now. Example I would put Ushers "Yeah" permenantly on my hard drive because I can still rock that song today despite coming out over 3 years ago.
What I dont want to do is put a song thats a hit this year on my computer hard drive because that 60gb will wind down to 0gb over time not to mention slow down my computer. At this point I will have to sort thru all my music to see what to keep and take off.
What I wanted to do with the ipod was create play list for the different parties I do. I do an 80s night and I do a regular night. While I have an 80s playlist on my hard drive It necessarily wont have every 80s song that I have nor do I want to put a bunch of 80s songs on my laptop.
If i have my ipod I can create a playlist for my different genres of music for my different nights. This way I can just plug in my ipod into my laptop then VDJ will be able to read and access the music off my ipod so I can spin on turntables.
I DO NOT WANT TO DJ WITH MY IPOD....
please see the link below for what i'm trying to do.
http://www.torq-dj.com/videos/video.php?file=/flv/LESSON%2002%20The%20Browser%20P2.flv&width=640&height=380
Long story short is I would like to use my IPOD as a hard drive like Serato and Torq does but I dont want to use an external drive because I live in NY and I can listen to my ipod playlist while on the train to determine what songs I might want to play for the night. With an external hard drive I can not listen to the music directly
End of the day its easier to manage the temporary music on my ipod and delete it from there than off my computer hard drive.

Well, why not just buy a external hard drive for all of your music. I own three and keep all my music on them, I have three copies in case of loss on one or the other...and right now external hard drives are cheap..a lot less than an IPOD.

I hear what your saying...I dont believe its going to work..I cant test it cause I dont have an IPOD
consider a flash drive for ease of use .:)

I do have an external hard drive but for two reasons why I dont want to use an external.
First and foremost its easier and quicker for me to sort songs in Itunes and create a playlist than it is on a hard drive and then transfer it to an ipod. I can listen to songs in itunes and drag it into a play list. With a hard drive I have to still listen to it in itunes then minimize a folder to drag it onto an external drive. This can get annoying over time.
Second i have over 50,000 songs. As i get new songs and have less time to sort them its easier for me to just listen to them on my ipod on my way to work to see which ones are worthy of playing.
Plus i already have an Ipod why bother buying a new external drive...

Ipod and Itunes are not the tools for professional DJ. Some dj programs support it just because it's popular consumer electronics. Try to find some alternative. Players like Cowon A2/A3 have big hard drive, will work with VDJ and you can listen to your songs while you travel. The whole idea organizing music on ipod and itunes thru playlists makes it less compatible with VDJ.
I listen to new songs on my Cowon A3 in my car and delete songs that I don't like. When I get home I end up only with good songs on my player which can be transfered to the main music storage hard drive pretty fast and are ready to play.

Thanks filosoff but i think your comment on Ipod and Itunes is a matter of opinion because the same could be said about VDJ or any DVS of that matter. I would check into the Cowon but I already own an ipod. The thing is I already own Torq as well but i would prefer to use VDJ. In fact the only thing VDJ has over Torq is the video feature so its hard not to stray.
But like i said ill check into the Cowon if not i will just use my RCA Lyra. I'm sure it acts as a hard drive and it also works in media center.

Hey filsoff - I just checked out the Cowon and its pretty expensive to buy given the fact that I already own an Itouch.
Also I just realize the purpose of using Itunes / Ipod versus a hard drive is the the convience and quickest. I create 50 playlist in my itunes and just swap out the one I need for my upcoming parties onto my ipod, connect to the laptop and play. With a external hard drive I still have to go thru file management which at the end of the day is still easier to do in itunes.
But thanks for the knowledge..
Fatkatz- FYI using itunes and ipod is still sorting ur music like vynil. Its just in a digital format. As I stated before its easier to sort in itunes on an external computer where I have my library already tagged, formatted, etc just for personal listening
SKY - are you hiding on me? I would appreciate an answer from someone on the inside. I rather get an answer that says VDJ wont support this option right now than sit here wondering how to get it done. Because then ill be swayed to the dark side lol

I don't think theres a light or darkside just what fits your particular needs. If thats a priority for you and it's a must have for your life of djing then look into other alternatives. People like vdj because is many more good than bad. Other solutions can boast the same but VDJ offer a ton more so we all stay in as part of the VDJ family.
VDJ can be like Microsoft and want the world but it just not possible.

I was just joking about the darkside. Honestly I would probably just use Torq for my club gigs and VDJ for home/mobile use.
And I definitely agree with you on your statements but its also about growth. I mean we can all get by day to day with VDJ 4.2 but i'm sure everyone upgraded to 5.0 when it became available even if it contained features they will not use.
I just figured the itunes / ipod feature in VDJ was something that I might have overlooked since it seemed like a simple feature to intergrate thats all. Its by no means a deal breaker

I know what your saying DT. I'm trying to do this myself. The whole point is can VDJ read an iPod connected to iTunes? I think this is useful for obvious reasons. If someone had a request, and gave you their iPod or iPhone you could mix in whatever they had via VDJ. Not what I;m using it for, but that would be the most obvious use for a feature like this, not to mention really cool.
The last post was 2008, has this been solved yet?
I have a laptop PC and a desktop PC. My collection is on the desktop. My laptop is close to being full. I don't want to put any more tracks on the laptop, so I was hoping to organize my sets on the desktop, sync them to my iPod and plug my iPod into the laptop. If VDJ could read an iPod connected to the computer it's running on I could do DJ my sets and just unplug the iPod without leaving anything extra on the laptop.
Am I making sense? Does anyone else think this could be a useful feature?
Also, some have mentioned that you could just use an external HD. If you can do this, than why can't you use an iPod enabled to work in HD mode?
Any takers? I'm looking to purchase soon and this is kinda important consideration in my setup.

My this is an old thread! Ipods are a pain in the butt to read from due to the way the files are stored, the music's hidden away in a subfolder inside the "ipod_control" folder on the drive's root. The tracks are scattered randomly across various subfolders, and have random filenames, although fortunately the id3 tags are still readable. VDJ can still read these tracks as long as your database is set up to read id3 tags - I can't remember exactly, you may also have to set the ipod_control folder to be unhidden as well.
I have an old ipod video 80gb that I've recently changed the firmware on. It now runs RockBox instead of the original Apple firmware, the advantage being that adding music is just a drag and drop affair, no more messing about in itunes, and you can keep your filenames and proper directory structure on the ipod's hard disk. The ipod still works as an mp3 player, and as far as Virtual DJ or any other software is concerned, it's just another external hard drive.
