Topic: Refusing to play a track.

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

Had a request for a track last night at my local gig, but I refused to play it as it didn't seem right for the buzz I had.

The person came up 3 times and had a moan at me, I said to him that I wouldn't play and then told me to f**koff. Told my boss and he said I had done right. But it put a downer on my night.

Just would like you optimums on this issue.

When I was working the clubs.I never flat out said no I refuse to play a song unless it came from the management. Drunks and the word no are a lethal combination sometimes. I always went the rout of "I'll try to play it..but no promises" Instead of just a flat no. Didn't always work..but it avoided a lot of BS...

Well you didn't say why Jimmy, but the DJ always has the final say on what and when.

If it didn't fit or had content issues, you were perfectly in your right to deny it.

Freebird! Freebird! Freebird!
Play it now, Play it now!!!

So, instead Rick would play Sweet Home Alabama...he is just that sort of rebel.... ;-)

I explained to him and my boss, why I was not going to play it. It might off upset a few of the other punters.

It's when he insulted me, that did it though.

should of smacked him in the mouth.... always makes me feel better

That's what I was thinking mate. But it was one of those village idiots we all know, if you know what I mean.

'listening to the village drunks" is what has made our club start slipping back downward again.
the same people that complained that i was playing the same songs over and over, i.e. what the customers have asked for and what was filling our big ass dance floor night after night, the i-don't-have-a-life-so-i'm-there-every-night people, keep sending the manager or owner/manager up with - here's a shocker: requests for the same damn songs night after night. they would rather keep the 10% of the crowd that sucks up to them and doesnt spend that much money, than the 90% that comes in and spends a few hundred a night, so now we have about 300 less people in the bar on a regular basis. as a result energy levels have dropped like a brick and we end up with being a "bar" not a nightclub.

a request is just that - a request. it's not an order, an ultimatum or a requirement. if they want to give attitude about it - and what drunk doesnt? you either develop a thick skin or just give it right back and try not to let it escalate into something you need to call the cops over.

personally i dont think i have the energy to feel bad about a customer giving me grief anymore. a few more months of the B.S. i've had to go through and we'll either end up closing, or i might just be hanging up the headphones and taking a walk.

who me? stressed out?... just a smidgen.

We've all been through it.

When I finally got tired of the bullshit from management, waitresses, and the occasional really belligerent drunk; I changed clubs; and started my Mobile Business.

Now I make 3X the money, qualify for many more expense write-offs, and enjoy going to the club (the naked women don't hurt either)

Here's the fun part..........

I went BACK to the club I quit from, just for a Saturday night off (no mobile gig) to people watch, let the Girlfriend dance her ass off,and get Comfortably Numb. I got Confronted by a few female customers DEMANDING to know why I quit, the new DJ would not play the music they asked for, would not play much dance music at all (place plays a LOT of heavy metal and hard rock music). Another girl actually SLAPPED me for quitting.

These are the same people who 6 months ago were bitching and complaining about me and my "bad attitude"

Should you worry about refusing to play a request...........

HELL NO

sorry terry but somebody tells me to do that they know what to expect.... doesn't happen often, but they remember, don't treat me like shit... there lucky if they get the off word out.....

Just having a bit of fun T...no offense...

Jimmy what type of music was you playing and what song did he wanted played. I think thats the big questions here. If the song was not that bad I would have played one verse in and out if I could get away with it. But I dont know the details of why u didnt play it and what song it was

Nightclubs are funny like that. We aim to please our guests but as a professional paid dj whom is there to entertain through our experience and knowledge of how to work a crowd is always questioned it seems.

List of common dialogs I get (I am sure you guys relate):

customer: do you have (insert most "low energy or non-format for the club" song possible) song?
me: sorry. I don't have it. (common reply to shorten the conversation if I feel I am not going to play their request)
customer: what?!?! (disbelief)
me: (this is where I become a smart ass) -- (shouting) I SAID I DON'T HAVE IT!! (only because they said "what?")

or sometimes they respond with the following:

-- what kind of dj are you? I can't believe you don't have it.

-- I will bring it to you tomorrow... you will like it!

-- oh you don't have it... ummm ... what do you have?

-- help me think of a song I want...

I could go on... but I have to get to work to prepare for the previous dialog possibilities...

This may come as a complete surprise to some of you, but I am a mutha pucker, and proud of it. I graduated at the top of my class, and have a different business model. The customer is right, until he is wrong. I get to make that decision. I am with most of you but side with low-fat al, at the beginning of the exchange. First, I do not give a shit what anyone wants to hear, because I already know. I do not have a neon sign flashing over the booth, asking for the customers help in programing music. If you approach me with respect, and ask for a song that I know is shit, I will say with a smile "I'm sorry, I don't have that song". If you say some stupid stuff like "what kind of DJ are you", my response is "the kind that does not have that song, please excuse me, I'm very busy". If you say "I have it in the car", my response is, "I don't allow customers to bring in music, please excuse me, I'm very busy". If you ask for a song that I feel I can work in, I will say "I will see what I can do". I can take any verbal abuse known to man, but do not have to talk to you. This is not my club, and will listen to your request, even though I don't have to. My look of disdain is quite evident on my face. It is also quite evident that my IQ is higher then your whole families, and that I am more then capable of taking care of myself, if things should become physical. I will give you a wide berth, and remind you that, you have been using some form of mood altering substance, and I have not. I am in full control of all of my body parts, and in the 21 years I have been in this club, I have only had to prove myself one time. I was suspended for a week in 07 for knocking out a customer, for putting his hands on me. It is not something I am proud of, but will do it again, in a minute. I gave him three warnings, which was two too many. No one gets to touch me without some serious forceful reaction, from me. There is a reason they took jukeboxes out of the clubs. No one wants to hear what you want to hear, over and over, and over. This is not about what some individual wants to hear. If that was the case, we would bring back jukeboxes. That is why we have been given this responsibility. Don't allow a few jerk offs the pleasure of interfering with that responsibility.

hear hear, AMAHM after reading your post i feel i have a twin brother, except i never got suspended :-)

Kaoz

Don't let it harsh on your mellow, Jimmy. I tend to use the "I don't have it" and "I'll see what I can do" methods as well. However, there have been times when I just look at annoying drunken prick number 99 (you know, the one that won't leave you alone) as if he were speaking a foreign language that I just can't seem to understand...That works, too ;)

Namecalling and expletives are just idiot's tools in lieu of a snappy comeback, because they simply lack the wit to say anything intelligent (there's that IQ thing, hehe)...You know the type, they're about as sharp as an orange.

Also, like AMaHM has alluded to, if you don't touch the DJ and piss him off, chances are you'll leave with whatever teeth you came in with, or you might piss someone else off before you do.
