i just bought a new laptop and before I start converting my files over I was wondering should I keep Windows Vista or load XP on it? I searched the internet and read a lot about how much resources Vista eats up just to run. i will only be using this laptop to run VDJ. It is a HP Pavillion 9815, AMD X2 (Duo) TL60 2.0 GHz processor, 3 gigs of DDR2 RAM. 250 gig hard drive. it has a decent graphics card 256 MB / 1024mb shared. I am thinking of started video mixing incase that is a deciding factor.
i have read the threads here and i know most people state it is a matter of preference but i was wondering if anyone had any hard core experience or facts to support one or the other? No speculation please just hard facts.

you could do a dual boot if you'd like. I plan on it just to play with vista and still have good old XP. That way you can have the best of both worlds. I would use Xp to run vdj (audio only). I have heard about some users liking running vdj in vista so i guess you should try it out 1st then see what works for you.

Well it wont hurt you to try vdj out on the Vista without messing with anything just play some vidz and see how it performs. Alot of users are seeing good results with Vista over XP.

How did I know you'd reply to this thread.. Lol
But does vista really improve the video? why would that be? What does it do differently??

Windows XP here all the way. Had Vista before and had problems with audio. I upgraded to XP and performance is really high.

really depends on the graphics card, let me let you in on a little secret, if its an nvidia card and its of the 8000 series, vista and vdj will work better. We've done some extensive testing. Mp4's will also playback better. It takes a little tweeking to get the audio right with asio but other then that its pretty good.

i've been running vista on an off the shelf home edition now for nearly a year and a half, mainly using vids with no problems what so ever until recently, but that was immediately rectified when i found out there was no paste on the heat sinks. the only thing that i did do was after reading in the forums somewhere was to get rid of the norton software,
oh by the way the card i'm using is the nvid 7300 can run vids with multiple plugin effects running, the only one i'm having problems with is the clip bank and that only started when i upgraded to 5.1 and introduced the rmx into the line up, its making the audio and vids stutter, gonna have to sit down when i get the time and get to the root of that problem, but other than that i'm happy with vista.

I use Vista as my primary OS for non performance reasons only; there is no feedback buzzing through the monitor when using the mousewheel or harddrive access is at a peak. I have a U46 SE and since the new driver the maximum latency it allows is 288, with Vista SP1 I get appalling performance, with XP SP3 I can run the card at 64 without problems.
Vista does run heavy and a lot of 3D applications (mostly non applicable to VDJ depending on your plug-ins) either require double the amount of RAM for your GPU or system memory.
Currently I'm dual booting Vista with XP. You can do this fairly easily by installing XP on a new partition and then start your computer from the Vista DVD. Do a repair to restore the bootloader and then you will have Vista back. Once inside Vista download a program called EasyBCD Edit, this will allow you to add XP to your boot menu.
Does this apply to all DX10 cards including the ATI HD range? Generally ATI has always been the leader with IQ and this type of 2D performance. A quick question about MP4 playback, does VirtualDJ now feature an inbuilt H.264 decoder which is able to offload processing to the GPU? ATI Avivo with the right codec has done this regardless of XP/Vista for a while now although obviously native is better if that's the case :-).

uuuuhhhh .....that's what i always say ......
apparently i don't know anywhere near as much about video as Andrew
"long ago , in a galaxy far, far, away " 1 gig of ram was a pretty good size of Ram ......now with Vista it's not enough just for what the dumbass civilians out there are trying to do with it ........

Hehe, I experienced this just the other day. I put together a nice desktop for a friend running Vista Home Premium with 2GB of RAM. One of the sticks died and the system was so sluggish with just 1GB. I had to end up disabling some of the eye candy such as the sidebar, barely used features like indexing and perform some more tweaks. We occasionally have a LAN game of C&C3 in the house (a game with requirements that do require double the resources with Vista) and the performance difference from 1GB to 2GB is staggering. VirtualDJ works great at very low latency (TCV) on my XP partition (1GB of RAM) but my card in general performs badly with Vista.
I realise I have a bit of a reputation (not particularly good) on these boards with some people so just want to clear up my comments from Cyder's post are not hostile. If VirtualDJ does decode H.264 now that's quite incredible. I've purchased the software when it was v3 and have not to this day had to pay for any upgrades and the evolution of the software has come such a long way. You won't believe how happy I was when I first tried v5.1 the other week and discovered things like automatic key detection and in general just how stable the program performs. Most companies charge between major revisions or even codec support (as they incur licensing fees) and Atomix have given us so much already, so kudo's to everyone involved :-).

Obviously dx10 cards with run better with native dx10 support that you can only find in vista. Vdj will playback h264 with the internal video decoder, it has for awhile if you have hardware acceleration on vdj will always offload the work to the gpu where ever possible
