sorry to double post but i have to share this with everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

i have been tryin to find the perfect laptop to do video with! i use vdj, korg zero 4 mixer/soundcard, and tcv. i got nothing but headaches til i got this Acer laptop at best buy for 500 dollars and it performs better than all 4 of the others i had last month!!!

here are the specs to the acer extensa 4420

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core TK-57 (1.9 GHz, 2 X 256 KB L2 cache)
Memory: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM, 160GB 5400RPM hard drive
Optical Drive: DVD-Super Multi drive
Display: Screen size: 14.1" CrystalBrite TFT LCD WXGA, Resolution: 1280 x 800
Video Card: ATI Radeon® X1250 with up to 896 MB of HyperMemory™ (256 MB of dedicated system memory, up to 640 MB of shared system memory)
Operating System: Windows® Vista™ Home Premium 32bit

as you can see its not very powerful yet it worked straight out the box! no video freezing and time code latency is at its lowest!!!
the big thing i like about this laptop is that i can upgrade the cpu, hard drive, and the ram to make it more powerful but i don't have to!

These are the other laptops i had:

New! Sony - VAIO

Model: VGN-AR830E

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo mobile processor T8300; 3GB DDR2 memory; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with Blu-ray Disc support; 17" widescreen; 400GB hard drive capacity; NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT graphics with 256MB dedicated video memory (up to 1535MB total video memory as allocated by Windows Vista; Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1

this one would work for an hour and crash and the sound would cut in and out!

next was

Gateway Model: P-6860FX

Intel® Core™2 Duo mobile processor T5550; 4GB DDR2 memory; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive; Labelflash support; 17" widescreen; 320GB hard drive; NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800M GTS graphics with up to 512MB discrete GDDR3 video memory; Bluetooth; Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1

this one wouldnt even work with time code so it went back the same day!!!

the last 2 aren't even worth mentioning.

so i had problems with the high end laptops with intel processors and nvidia video cards. no problems so far with a low end laptop with a amd processor and ati video card!

weird

It isn't always a simple plug n play. you have to be prepared to make tweaks and play around which is a drawback to most. You say you couldnt get the Gateway P-6860 FX to work but I recently posted a youtube video of this laptop performing very well. I also use time coded vinyl and granted the laptop didn't work right out the box and needed extended tweaking but its great. I do wish I would have tested a cheaper costing laptop though myself. I do not think you need a great video card for this program to be honest it needs a great processor to handle it though and find a good video card driver. Nvidea I believe has issues with DPC latency with their video card drivers which is causing alot of audio problems with users.

Kapitalkev.... I purchased the p6860-FX last week, and my RMX came today. I've got it connected and I'm starting to play around with it, but I'm noticing a few hiccups with the rmx that weren't there when I was simply running the program alone on my laptop. Could you tell me what you did to fix your issues? I wouldn't ask, but this is my first laptop and I'm not super adept with changing things around. Totally willing and wanting to learn, but I need some guidance. I'm also planning on hooking up my denon 1000's and using timecoded cds with it. Thanks in advance for your patience and help!

what do you mean by hiccups? and are you doing videos?

just some audio stutters........the sound cuts out for split seconds here and there. Yes I'm running full video, that was the driving force that got me to make this change. I've been purely cdj's up to this point and I decided it was time to make the leap :)

oh and could you post the link to your youtube video? I'd love to check it out!

to djkapitalkev

i bought the gateway after you posted that it worked great with your set up! i did every tweak possible and i did a clean install of xp and i still couldn't get time code to work longer than 20 mins...... i know that my korg zero 4 is the main problem cause its so fussy with everyhting and the sound card is made for ableton and traktor. i just cant believe that this 500 dollar acer is doing the trick! i just did a 6 hour gig and i didnt have one midi , video, or audio problem! the acer didn't even get hot?!?!?!

i know that with vdj everything ain't plug and play but wouldn't that be so much easier........... lol

p.s. i will have videos posted really soon of my gigs and my video mixes.

djphilthy create a new post with your problem and that way not only will you get help from me but others. i dont want to hijack DJcaraby's post. im glad you got a great deal and its working out and if VDJ was just plug n play I guess Serato would lose its market share. lol

here is the video by the way (maybe the insert will work fingers crossed) if not copy and paste:
