Dr. DeBakey has died , he was 99. He and Dr.Barnard were/are synonymous with cutting edge heart surgery ......
He would have to be on anyone's short list of giants towering over 20th century medicine , along with Fleming (penicillin) Salk (polio) and just a few others .......
I remember when i was a kid hearing "live ! via early bird satellite !" and then you'd see him doing open heart surgery , saving someone's life on live tv , it was pretty dramatic ........

Yet another great visionary and forward thinker has succombed to the undeniable master that is mortality. Nevertheless, ninety-nine years is evidence of a life lived well, thanks, in part, to one of his own procedures (!!), and his legacy will live on in modern medicine forever.
He was unarguably ahead of his time, and it is interesting to note that his techniques and innovations were once looked upon contemptuously by his contemporaries, but have since become quite indispensible and life-saving. Sometimes, it is just more appropriate to admit that change IS good.

yes apparently 2-3 years ago he had one of his own procedures done .... He was one of those people who worked extremely hard ,was always working a full schedule of surgeries , plus researching new procedures and tools , plus writing .......
Dr. DeBakey invented 70 new tools , and was always working on new devices . He was already working on a new pump when he was in med school and later made more advanced pumps and artificial hearts. One patient lived 5 days on his artificial heart .
