Having loud speakers in front of you is not a problem for many years my ears have stayed the same no loss at all or ringing
But over the last 12 months my ears have been ringing for quite some time after i have worked may be 48 hours after
the problem is the way the dj booth is set up in the club i work at im in between 2 sets off yamaha speakers each with 2/ 15 inch 1 /2 inch tweeter . as you know you have to play loud in clubs to get the vibe so to my question ear plugs Yes or no if yes it feels realy strange when i speak on the mike. is there a way of getting sound level droping plugs without the distortion ? if no then i think my ears will be damaged soon any help much apreciated
cheers

Yes,...the effects of hearing loss are often not noticed for several years..do yourself a favor and look into some good noise canceling earplugs..Shure makes some real good ones, they are a bit pricey but worth it. I noticed after using mine for a couple of months.they actually help my mixing, and I can hear the person next to me more clearly too...

I don't use them it's so un-attractive, especially when I bird as for your number and you have to pull the plugs out to hear what she has just said, lol

huh? Sorry, I could not hear ya...lol
Earplugs are a VERY GOOD IDEA.
If your sound system is like my sound system, Earplugs are a VERY GOOD IDEA
I DJ with live Go-Go bands here in D.C. we use about 4 sets of custom built quads just for bass. The amount of sound pressure can change or disturb your heart rate. Imagine what it does to your ears?

Great subject.
When we talk about hearing loss from DJing I always believed that it went with the job. True I tried to hold down the volume a bit and keep the head phones as low as possible. What's the worst over time? Maybe just cant hear as well?
WRONG
one year ago I fell victim to TINNITUS from DJing. My god this sux. At first it was just a hi pitched sound in the backgound when I try to sleep. Now it is so loud that it is the main sound I hear 24/7. Watching TV it is LOUDER, Listening to music it is LOUDER. Jogging or exersizing it get even LOUDER with increased blood preasure. I cant sleep. Im taking sleeping tablets every few days so I get some good sleep.
The only time I cant hear it is when im in the shower, or when the ambient sound is above 85db
I wear plugs now but for me it is too late. THERE IS NO CURE. all I can do is stop it from getting worse.
Do youself a massive favour. Go to your local muisc shop and buy a pair of HEAROS. For $30 you will save your soul.
Since getting TINNITUS I now know 3 other DJ's and a nightclub secutiry with tinnitus. THERE is no cure other than death. I have been told of a local drummer that popped himself because the sound drove him mad. I can totally understand why.
It maybe inconvienent to wear plugs, It may take some time to get used to, particularly if you talk on the mic but do yourself a favour. WEAR EAR PLUGS or even better, buy a set of SURE in ear monitors. this will reduce the sound and still let you mix.
the other option is go to a hearing specialist. They can make you "musicians earplugs" for around $150 - $250. They will reduce the sound by 9, 12 or 15 db and are a far better option than regular earplug that reduce the sound by 30db+
Hope for your life... you take my advice.

I'd rather go a night without getting laid if it mean that I'll be able to hear when I retire...Every other job requires that certain safety measures are taken (hard hat areas for example), so why shouldn't DJs?

Because OSHA has not gotten their claws into the industry yet......

I've worked around Airplanes for 15 years, and DJ'd for 8. I wear double hearing protection around the jets, and I used to wear none when DJing. I get a hearing test once a year, and although I haven't had any official hearing loss yet, I did notice that I had a hard time hearing certain tones. Started wearing ear plugs when DJing and it hasn't gotten worse. Like Busta said, "protect ya neck." Well, that doesn't make sense, so protect your hearing.
