Guys

I'm after some advice on how, and which is the best way to promote ones self. I'm happy in the 2 gigs I do now, but I wouldn't mind trying to break into the bigger clubs. This is what I've been thinking so far

1. Been looking at a few DJ Agency, some seem OK other's a waste of time, is it a good idea or not to join one.

2. Visit and get myself known in a various clubs in my area, speak to the owners/managers/promoters.

3. Or send DVD/CD out (very old school, like sending a mixtape out, lol) with a cover letter, explaining who you are, and what you can do and your experience so far.

I've actually done the above and got a couple of places interested, but as of yet nothing, just my sodding look, lol. I would like to know your views and experiences with either of these.

Jimmy, have you made yourself a website? Websites are great marketing tools, fill it up with mixes and relevent material and then add the website on your business card;^]

Good idea Timmy mate,

and no I haven't made a website, it always looks abit to difficult for me, maybe soon I'll take a look at it.

Check out bluehost.com

That's where I'm going to be getting mine from, their online demo of the included webbuilder tool makes it look pretty simple. I hope so, 'cause otherwise I'll be lost as well..lol;^]

Cool, Thanks for the heads up Timmy,

I'll check it out mate.

This is something I have often wondered Jimmy. Self promotion...without becoming an annoying idiot, who appears to be self absorbed. Let me know what you come up with... ;-)

Make sure if you do a CD that it breaks in the music and say's Promo only every other minute or they will just play it to the masses at your expense. I have know a few that used to collect CD's n tapes that were handed in by DJ's for there cars for long journeys etc

No problem Jimmy;^]

Jimmy, here's a few tips based on what I do.

1.Yellow pages add (you can even have a free add)

2.Business Cards (use Vista Print they have a daft offer on something like £5 for 100 cards!)

3.Write letters and pop your cards in the envelope

4. Visit bars/clubs personally

5. Web Site is a great idea and here's a link to microsoft's latest free give away, the website is £10.99 per year however the first two years are free.believe me i have my own and there is no charge whatsoever until year three, how good is that!!! Also they make it so easy to build the site, there is no coding to be done you simply click a template edit the text you want and add some pics and contact details etc and your up and running and guess what I checked it out for you and this website is available:

www.djjimmyb.co.uk

fantastic value for a .co.uk website.

Hope this helps

Nice one Mascherano.

Could you please post a link to it mate, there is actaully no link in your previous post.

Thanks again mate.

Well something is working right for me in what I've done so far. Just had a guy who owns a big club in Mansfield (near where I live) asking me to go down there tonight for a chat, and see the club in action.

And if it all goes well, let me have a spot tomorrow night.

That is always the best, caus ethey already know what they are getting in you..........

Visiting clubs in person is time consuming, but in my opinion if you don't have a manager or booking agent it is the best way because many times you will come upon opening that have not been advertised yet.

I have a few demo mix DVD's of different formats prepared and I visit clubs and give them directly to the entertainment manager or owner with a card and my current schedule and invite them to come see my show....nothing like having them see you in your native environment!

Well it really went well, last night, But I have to say the 2 guys or own the place don't know actually what they want.

It's a father and son setup, when I got the I spoke to the father, and he wants a DJ for a Saturday night, who can play House/Dance music. this is why he rang me up. When his son came in to have a chat to me, he said they want somebody who plays R'n'B and old school and needs to do plenty of mic work, which is not my style really. So I was abit confused.

I had a walk around the club, which is nice BTW, and had a couple of beers with the father, he said he liked the way I was and that I seem confident. I told him I was confused and that he and his son actually sit's down and discuss what they want to do on the Saturday, If what they want is House/Dance then give me a ring.

I always found it was better to go ahead and try to meet with the owners or managers of clubs. I had tried mailing flyer's but meeting them in person is the best way to go. When I had first started out djing I mailed flyer's to different places and the turn out was very low. Being the entertainer/dj I would have helped them come up with a plan of action. Such as theme parties, ladies night or other ideas to promote the club and yourself. I'm convinced advertising from past clients (word of mouth) is the best advertising. I do most of my advertising on the internet. Yellow pages where I leave turned out to be mostly price shoppers.

Nothing worse than two bosses with opposing views and alcohol in the mix. I would wait and see if they call back Jimmy and make it crystal clear who is the main person you would answer to, before the drinking starts. And try my level best to answer only to the HNIC.....
