I arrive at the job the usual 2 hours early and finish my set up in @ 45 minutes. I boot up both of my lappys and notice one of my EXT. hds is not working. Its a 500 gig Maxtor that is less than six months old. Talking to my helper/co-worker for the evening...about 30 minutes later when she asks "Are you going to turn on that computer?" The problem was I had turned it on, about an hour ago. It is dead like Nixon no screen, no lights nadda. I think to myself "Shit the bed Fred, there goes your back up for tonight." @ 45 minutes after that the bridal party arrives and its time for introductions. Literally two minutes before I am ready to perform the intros the mother of the bride walks over and says "I am so sorry Terry, both my husband and I have forgotten our checkbooks. We will have to pay you later." I honestly thought she was joking and said "Thats OK...I can tear down in like 20 minutes and be out of your hair." She gives me a look like, not funny long hair.
I do the intros and hand the best man the wireless mic for the speech. He, in turn, sticks it into a glass of water to fish his notes out of his pocket, the problem? The glass was full! This mic is less than four months old, a Shure PGX. I walk over to the brides mother and say as nice as I can muster at this time. "According to my contract you are liable for that expense. Please ask a close family member if they will write me out a check. If I do not see payment in the next 30 minutes I will have no choice but to take my equipment and go home." The contract states I get paid before I start. And any damages caused by guests is the responsibility of whoever signed the contract.
I see the mother of the bride walk over the head table and start talking to the bride and groom. The groom, instantly punches the best man with one of the prettiest right crosses I have ever seen, and reaches in his, the best man's, breast pocket and pulls out his checkbook. The groom walks over to me and asks how much they owe me for the evening. I show him the contract, point out the balance, and hand him a PSSL catalog I had with me to look at while waiting to start and show him how much that mic is. He writes a check adds two hundred to the price walks back over to the best man, has him sign it, walks back to me. Thanks me, and asks me to leave.
The bride hot on his heals asks me to stay and promises no one else will be doing anything stupid for the rest of the night. I am contracted, and now paid so I stay. It was a pretty much normal night after that...but man I hate nights like that. Thanks for letting me vent T

"I forgot my Checkbook.." = I don't really think I wanna pay you.
Can't believe people think they'll get away with that kinda crap. I liked the groom belting the Best man. You should post video if you have some.
Glad you had your mic paid for and, the contract balance.
Do you think you'll get referral business from them? LOLOLOLOLOL

Well Brian, here in Illinois if someone writes a check over 1000USD and it bounces, they are liable for 3x the amount and court costs. Also if restitution is not resolved it is a criminal offense. This check was for more than $1000

Wooooooooooow...
I've had some bad/weird/phucked up nights but your night was way to the left.
It's the kind of night that all you can really do is take a step back and smile so you don't lose it.
GOOD JOB Terry.

Holy Moly !! Hope I never get a situation to that extreme !! Makes for a very uncomfortable night. I just had a wedding 2 weeks ago where the brides parents forgot their checkbook too. Fortunately for me ... they all hang out at the club where I DJ every weekend and I knew they were honest people and the money wasn't a problem for them. They showed up at the club the following weekend with checkbook in hand !! Glad it worked out for youTerry. Us DJ's have WAY too much $$$ invested in equipment for some drunk just to have no respect for it. What the hell was that guy thinking !!??
