better wear a showercap.
think of smoke.
how much smoke do you need to set off an alarm?
with high ceilings youre probably ok.
its all about how much fog you use.
sit down and think about it.
if you have high ceilings and use the fog machine in moderation you wont set off any alarms.
position the machine as far away from the detectors as possible.
think about wind, thermodynamics, etc.

Really? I was told the FOG isn't considered a ACTUAL SMOKE by the sensor and also that the sprinklers only go off when FLAME hits?

there will never be any ONE rule for EVERY situation.
take into account:
type and quantity of fog juice used
type of smoke detector
type of fire suppression installed in the building
if you want to play it safe..............
use the fog machine in moderation, away from the detectors.

Maybe you can get a hazer, but most smoke-detecting sprinklers will be set off by a fog machine.

i've never been able to make our sprinkler system go off and i have put so much fog in the air testing it, that you couldnt see from one end of the dancefloor to the other.

A fellow DJ in the same town as I set off the fire alarm at the local pub a few months ago. Luckily the Fire Dept decided not to charge the venue for the call-out.
I know of one venue which wont allow smoke machines for a security reason. If a big fight breaks out its not too clear who might have started it or who is using their glass or bottle as a weapon (which occasionally happens here).
I remember the good old days when there were so many smokers around inside you didnt even need to use a smoke machine. Wasnt all that long ago. Probably a good thing for myself in about 20 years I guess.
If your really worried about it just disperse small bursts of the smoke near your lights it still gives a good effect and should not be thick enough to set off an alarm by the time it gets to the ceiling.

Yeah, it depends on the fire detection system. Some sprinklers just have some kind of tap that opens with heat (from a fire). Obviously this kind is not affacted by a fog machine.
Other kinds that work on smoke detection can[ be set off by a fog machine. I've personally done it once doing a kids' party in a primary school. And I've heard many stories about it happening in hotels and them having to evacuate the whole hotel and everyone had wait for the fire service to check the building before they were allowed back in.
I haven't used a smoke machine for years because why take the risk of ruining someone's party, or worse, their wedding day?
I've also heard that some types of haze machine don't set off smoke detectors, but I've never had one so I don't know if that's actually true or not.

I can't begin to count how many school fire alarms I have set off over the years. I stopped using my fog machine at all school functions because they all have upgrade to smoke detectors and the fog machine do set them off. I cannot say if a hazer will work. Have not gotten around to buying one yet.

had problems with smoke machines in night clubs too. had a 2 stage fire alarm go into evac due to the smoke drifting into two zones that wernt heat only, i ended up convincing the management to get the dectors changed (as it was there light jock and smoke machine setting the bloody things off!) which was nice
if in doubt
leave the smoke out!
(sound like a no smoking campain slogan!)
