Does anyone know how beatgrid works, specifically? What do each of the squares represent? I love the effect, but I'd like to know how to really tweak it to get some really cool stutters. From what I can tell it affects the audio for one bar, but can't figure out exactly what else it's doing...

not sure exactly, but something along this line.
1 tilt of neck = 1 beat (thin squares in rhythm window)
4 beats = 1bar (thick squares in rhythm window)
4 bars = 1 phase (not used in vdj)
beatgrid echos/loops beats with in bars according to how the boxes are lighted up.
top to bottom = either [time] or [bar]
left to right = either [time] or [bar] (opposit of top to bottom)
you see boxes highlighted from top left to right bottom because it echos beats or segments of beats for each bar according to by time.
theoretically, you can echo beat 1 of any bar at the 3 beat.. it would look like this..
0000
0000
0000
X000
X = repeat beat
0 = play beat
echo beat = horizontally
echo on X beat of bar = vertically.
play with it long enough and you'll get it
do you get it?

bascailly what hes saying is the 1st beat and the 4th beat of the bar are represented by the big squars the rest are the beats inbetween!

thanks for the ino. so basically the small thin squares are 16th notes, big squares are 1/4 notes going left to right. but what is represented top to bottom? still fuzzy on that.

i dont know if i remember right because i dont own vdj, but i think it was something like this:
Example with 4 Beats/Big Squares in the effects-window. You got a song going bum tschak bum tschak and so on.
From left to right is the order of the beats of one bar/4 Beats, from top to bottom the timeline. So if you got the song going original it should look like this:
original
ORDER
T XOOO bum
I OXOO tschak
M OOXO bum
E OOOX tschak
Repeat 1st beat
ORDER
T XOOO
I XOOO
M XOOO
E XOOO
Repeat 2nd Beat/Clap
ORDER
T 0XOO
I 0XOO
M 0XOO
E 0XOO
Now, for the tricky part of this Effect, lets take another Sample. 1-2-3-4 shall be a good example. So the song goes 1-2-3-4:
original
ORDER
T XOOO
I OXOO
M OOXO
E OOOX
1-1-2-2
ORDER
T XOOO
I XOOO
M OXOO
E OXOO
4-3-2-1
ORDER
T OOOX
I OOXO
M OXOO
E XOOO
2-4-1-3
ORDER
T OXOO
I OOOX
M XOOO
E OOXO
I dont know exactly, but the bigger Version of this Effect shall work with 16 Beats/4 Bars.
And remember, maybe I got some things twisted. It could be that left to right is the time and vice versa. I hope I could help you, maybe someone could make a wiki out of this.

Thanks for the detailed post greatmesk!
Thats actually starting to make sense now. I think time is going left to right tho and order is top to bottom, not sure tho. gonna play around with it.

Also unless I'm mistaking it doesn't always start on the first of the four beats, it's relative as to when you activate it. Beatgrid is actually one of my most used effects.
