Topic: Improving set up beyond laptop + external soundcard

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

Hi all,

I'm using VirtualDJ to play a mix of minimal house, old school hiphop and chart stuff in London venues with around 300 capacity. So far I've been using a basic setup: USB Soundblaster Live external soundcard, with the venues' analogue mixers.

This is working well for me, but thinking I should re-invest some of my earnings in improving my set up. I like to walk to/from the venues so prefer not to bring more than I can carry in a rucksack, and my budget is up to £400 (but could happily spend less).

At home, I've an old analogue mixer with a mostly worn out crossfader, so one possibility is to upgrade that and perhaps use the replacement in venues if it offers more than their analogue mixers. But prefer not to break the "no more than I can carry" rule.

What do you recommend to take my set up to the next level? New mixer, external controller, or something else entirely?

Thanks a lot,
Russell

Well it sounds like to me you need a all in one controller like the RMX for example, which comes with a free over the shoulder carry case with about £15, I would say.

Also you could purchase a copy of VirtualDJ 5.2.1.

This should add up just under £400, job done I think :)

Thanks a lot. Anything else I should consider, is the RMX the only way to go? ;)

No mate, there are other options open to you, but it all depends of yourself and what you want to spend.

I was just using the RMX as a example, as it a all in one controller and it's a native controller for VirtaulDJ and works straight out of the box. Plug and play.

Thanks. Want to spend £400 max. Do already have the external soundcard, so I'd be replicating that with the RMX.. but probably better to have it all in one. Any examples of alternatives? or is the RMX the obvious choice at that price?

Heres 3 controllers you could use, in conjunction with your own soundcard

Vestax VCI 100

Comes in about £320.

Numark Total Control

Comes in at about £160

The New Hercules Steel (not available yet, same as the RMX but without a soundcard)

I think I've read this will come in at about £220.

All 3 controllers are native, so it's just plug and play.

Hope that helps abit.

Thanks a lot! Been doing a load of reading this morning, and think I'll go for a controller and soundcard combined since should be less to go wrong, fewer leads and less to carry.

Probably heresy to mention it here, but Vestax have just brought out the VCI-300 in conjunction with Serato and it looks pretty smart. The software and hardware are very tightly integrated (nothing on screen which can be done with the hardware) and there's a few extra features above the RMX... fully backlit buttons, adjustable jog wheel torque and emergency pass through for a backup sound source.

But, it is £500 with software. Do like Virtual DJ a lot... should I stick with it? ;)
