If that is the screen shot of the watermark and that's what all the hullabaloo is about-man then I got to get a life.
Frankly, it is not overly obtrusive, no one in the audience will have a rat's ass idea as to what it is, and seems to me more people making a big deal out of something that most people wouldn't even notice.
Then when the rest of the providers start watermarking which I'm sure they will-then what?
I'm just glad we even have these services in the first place. We are far too spoiled in this new age of computer dj-ing and downloading.
Does anyone remember the days when you had to fork out $10-20 for a 12" single?!!! I have two mortgages invested in vinyl that is now collecting dust.
Between my two download subscriptions I am paying only $50.00 monthly (spent more than that weekly in the vinyl days) and actually making money dj-ing for a change-lol.
Bring on the watermarks!

I answered Scotty in the P.O. Forum where I spend very littlle time which is why I only have one stink'n star there.
This is my response in the P.O. forum....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"All I can say to the core guys here on our boards, thank you for the support and understanding"
Scotty, I'm not a "core guy" but I do have a 4 digit subscriber number and we spend more than a couple grand a year with P.O. so I'm going to offer my 2-cent opinion. (Wow didn't that sound BITCHY) LMAO
I received my first "Logo" implant on the November Express week one. I think P.O. is being a little (LOT) naive, this is going to do little to stop the rippers. Rippers will simply cover the logo, crop it out or a little of both.
http://home.comcast.net/~thirdrock/smile.jpg
I won't drop P.O. because of the logo but please put me in the NOT happy, really bitchy column.
And Oh yea... Happy Birthday :-) (November 10th)

Although we can't please everyone, we try to appease reuqests as they come in.
Someone's filler is another persons gem.
An example would be M.I.A. "Paper Planes" I received 13 emails, and 3 pages on a thread complaining about this song being filler, back when i programmed it in January. Forward to September and October I was getting complaints why we never serviced the clip.
We're not always right, no one is, but we aren't always wrong either.
I look forward to hearing some of your suggestions.

First for the sake of this email when I say "you" or "your" I am lumping all the DVD services currently available in the US together because they all suffer the same problems. I have raised this complaint on many occassions over many years but it has not changed and everyone keeps complaining about it and you apparantly don't care for what ever reasons.
My suggestion has always been the same, I have no problem with the dedicated urban, club, country and rock series. The problem is with your "hit" discs. The videos are usually so far behind radio play that by the time any given disc comes out you already know whether the videos on it are hits or not. It is VERY rare something comes out on a "hits" series disc that becomes a hit AFTER the disc is released. This being said there should virtually NEVER be a song on the disc that is not a hit (after all it is a "hit" dics and not a "hope it hits" disc). If there is not enough content of legitimate top 40 hits each month then either lower the number of tracks and the price or put the top 5 hits from the charts of each of the other categories (urban, club, country and rock) on that disc also instead of a bunch of filler that WILL NEVER be a hit on ANY chart!

So are the P.O. people being naive or just doing their best to combat piracy etc. Bottom line is that there is a way around everything if you know what you are doing. Hence all the various skins for Virtual DJ as an example.
The watermark is not all that intrusive as it is shown in the vid. capture and doesn't bother me one bit.

I'm sad to see that it's come to this.
I hope this solution addresses the problem it was intended to address, and doesn't just clutter up screens needlessly.

It's a stupid measure based on snobbery if you ask me.
The solution is simple: use another service.
People will always be able to get stuff illegally if they desire to do so, and people will always remix copyrighted material for better or worse.
The music industry is owned by a gang, and they want to own it and regulate it in such a way that more gangs can't get involved.

Watermark in videos is not new. Most of the companies are all putting watermarks. I subscribe to franchise record pool and all the vids have watermarks, you just learn to live with it.

I understand your needing to stop PromoOnly videos showing up on other video pool sites. However from this statement "We may revise the use of the watermark, and/or it's appearance in the future, but for now we need to take a stand." it sounds like other ideas and suggestions are not being taken in consideration at this time.
I just don't think this watermark is going to stop Remixers or other sites servicing PO Videos. You have stated in the PromoOnly forums you know who the remixers and sites that are using PO videos. Why not just have the legal team go after them directly?

Scott B... I brought my opinion of filler up to Glen E. awhile back. My stance starts simple. Subscribing to the weekly "hits" series I expect that I should have everything on the billboard top 50. Currently, I don't have the #1 song in the country from EV. I'm also missing #9, 11, 17, 18, 28, 30, 32, 36, 42, 46, and 47. Anyway, that's just under 25% of the Billboard Top 50 missing. Yet, I'm getting approximately 20-24 tracks per week.

Not really related but i gave up on promo only in the UK unfortunately one month they just stopped sending them to me.
No money has been taken since and when i tried to find out the cause i was not able to reach any one unfortunately.
We used to get a complimentary subscription here for tradeshows but this seems to have stopped too.
Its a shame because its quite a good content set in the UK usualy.

Firtly, regarding Scott Bucher, although Promo Only isn't my bag, I do respect Scott and we have debated before about video issues, and one of the things I admire about him is that he's approachable with ideas and suggestions.
I have to say though, watermarking doesn't work! OK, all my vids are legit, well, almost, I think ANYONE who says 'all' their content is completely legit is living in lala land, but I can honestly say, my video content is like 99.9% kosher. Watermarking will stop absolutely NOTHING, most wont even bother to cut it out, anyone thats into the movie scene will know that thousands of screeners get downoaded every day, some of these have running timers, banners, scrollng messages, some even flash black and white at you, yet even THAT doesn't discorage people, it's like burglars and car thieves, whatever new anti theft device, alarm, immobiliser gets invented, within 24 hours someone has invented a way round it!
To me, watermarking just alienates the legit paying customer and does no good at all.

It is businesses like this one that cause this whole watermarking to happen to promo only.
This gives companies like smashvidz & crooklynclan a bad rep because they choose to be shady and re-brand promo only's videos as their own for profit.

Agreed
Thats all I needed to see Al.
Some people just need to make noise about things.
I reacted the same way at first, but my first move was to contact them, both Scotty and Glen, and Scotty replied on his day off which also happened to be his birthday.
If you all want to be constructive, try that approach.
They are real people and have always cared what we think.
My request was to kill the PO text in the intro and outro which would lessen that which bothers me more, and incorporate the logo into the right corner along with the splash screens making it a little smaller.
All kinds of opinions on this subject, but I think Glen spelled it out best.
But more on point is this part below.
Hard to counter that one guys, without the labels we are all screwed regardless of what part of this industry we do business.

Hi guys,
Let's see if I can't clear up a few rampant misperceptions ...
The logo is not there because we want it there.
The logo is there because the record labels want it there.
The logo is there because the record labels are tired of seeing our stuff being distributed all over the world.
So tired, in fact, that many are considering no longer distributing content to those services who do not better protect their product.

I'm also ashamed, to be honest, that so many DJs have no regard whatsoever for the people who make all our careers possible. It says a lot about our profession; none of it good. We're finding a great many of those who have complained the loudest about our new logo policy to be distributing our videos all over the Internet. We can thank them for all of this -- for the need for logos.
Our suggestion box remains open; but the logo, in one form or another, is here to stay.
We make no apologies for doing the right thing and supporting the labels and artists who make all our livelihoods possible.

As stated before I have no problem with the watermark in the video, it is pretty inconspicuious. Here are a few thoughts/suggestions though.
1. The Labels/Distributors have the right to do whatever they want with the videos, and we as Dj/Vjs have the right to either subscribe or not to any service.
2. As customers we have NO WAY to know if a subscription service is legit or not (unless they do blattent things like leave part of the watermark showing) so the labels and legit services need to go after the illegal subscription services and not hassle the DJ/VJ who may not know it is illegal.
3. I realize the industry needs to make a profit; however, they also need to set their pricing points where it is AFFORDABLE for it's customers so they are not driven/tempted to explore alternatives. The industry needs to realize that Dj weekly pay has decreased significantly in the past decade. Based on areas I have worked like Phoenix, San Antonio, Denver, LA, Vegas & San Francisco in the past 10 years an AVERAGE DJ easily made $300+ per night and was working 4-5 nights per week. Now only the TOP END clubs pay Djs this money and few are working more than 2-3 nights per week as most clubs now are only only open 3 nights per week. We have seen our pay significantly decreased and our cost significantly increased as a percentage of this pay. In the 80's and 90's I subscribed to SEVERAL record pools at a total of about $150 per month (1/10 of my weekly income). Now to get all the video content a Dj needs to do a proper top 40 show they need to still spend about $150 per month, but that is now about 1/6 of of their weekly income.
4. Get us the product timely. I ask how illegal services like 8th wonder can get the video, edit, mask, crop and issue it and make it available in many cases MONTHS before promo only services it to their legit customers? Maybe the legit services need to rethink their distibution model so the illegals don't get the product so far in advance of the legals and then VJs don't need to go that route to get the product they need and patrons demand on a timely basis.
5. Obviously there is a HUGE need for electronic distribution methods to legit customers from legit services
a. with quality (not highly over compressed content)
b. timely (not waiting 2-3 months after the radio has burned a song out to get the video)
c. convenient (get it on my time schedule once it is released ala the low res commercial services like yahoo video, etc.). If the video is
released on January 18th I should be able to get it at 5am on January 19th for a show on the 20th...this is 2008 not the stone age!
d. Once I have the product I should be able to do whatever I want with it (except resell or redistribute it) such as editing and remixing for
MY use as I see fit for my performances. This means no locking to specific programs and inane protection schemes that restrict MY use
ala Venue VJ. If I want to add a turbo to my car's engine Hyundai has no right to stop me...why should the record labels?
The industry is filled with very very smart people and this is not rocket science. You would be amazed at how many potential customers you would unlock and how much more revenue you would generate by giving those customes a product they want...they will pay a fair price if it is what they want and need. We are after all consumers, that is what we do best...if their is something we WANT to consume......Theives will always be theives........Honest people only resort to illegal action when driven to it.
