Topic: Equipment Standard...? - Page: 1

Questa parte dell'argomento è obsoleta e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate

I dont know about you, but im sick and tired of other DJs telling me what the standard in equipment is.
When i use my TTXs im told the Tech 12 are the standard, when i use my Mixdeck im told the CDJ 1000, 800, etc.
When they see VDJ im told Serato or Traktor...

Over the last 15 years ive seen this industry turn so many corners and evolve. (or not according to some)
As a business person my goal remains the same, keep my cost as low as possible and provide my clients with the
lowest possible rates.
With the MP3 coming around and software controllers the amount of equipment i must carry around has dropped
making my job a little easier.
Given this, every time i buy a new piece of equipment i give it a good test run for a few days to make sure its stable
and that its going to serve its purpose, regardless of how big or how small, lets face it, they are not made the same anymore.
I have found that hardware comparability has improved drastically, specially in the last year, and that the combination of
equipment and software has increased (look at Serato Intro).

Is there a "Standard" nowadays? Last wednesday i saw someone rock a club with a RMX and VDJ and ive seen DJs with
Tech 12s completely blow... Is it not a little ridiculous to go around stating what the "Standard" is given that we all
know this industry is not going to be the same 5 years from now...
Every week there is a new controller, soundcard, mixer, etc... The market is saturated with so many gadgets, and its
all being bought!

Is there a standard? Is it personal preference? Or just a fad?

Well most clubs that I have been to use CDJ 800, 1000 etc.
But i personally don't give a piece of fecal matter if people don't use the "standard" equipment, all that matters is that they can rock a party.
With all of the new equipment coming out, it gives the modern dj a chance to be unique and emphasise their style of djing.
But that's just my opinion man

The word standard is " What Most djs use " If you go to most clubs, You will see either technics or Pioneer CDjs. The TTx turntables are really good. You will alway have someone saying something stupid about what you use. They say that because they feel that it wont perform just as good as the popular decks. They would automatically assume your not good without even listenning to the way you play. In New York city, The Djs mostly use the pioneer CDJ 1000's, 800 & The CDJ 2000's. You have very few Djs that use a Denon Hc4500. If its a small bar, The Dj would bring his preffered piece of equipment. You can watch a live hip hop performance and if you look at the DJ, You will see either Techs or CDjs being used.

I want to add that what is standard in the US is not overseas.

Mexico for instance you will more likely see VDJ and Numark in the clubs. Some of the larger clubs would have Pioneers but they are not going to be the 900 or 200. Much older models like the 400 and 850. Economics may come into play there.

Philippines and Australia is pretty big on Traktor and VDJ.

In US, Serato has a pretty big hold on the club scene.

We have this discussion about once a year on here.

Short answer:
No; There is no standard

To quote a movie I can't even remember the title of....
"American Components, Russian components.......ALL MADE IN TAIWAN!!!"

There are good brands out there you just have to look for them, problem is they make few products.

Denon is made in Japan, Japan is far better than Taiwan or China even though it's an Asian country still.

Most hotels, bars & clubs, the good ones that have had money spent on them have Denon CD/DVD players for playback, background etc.

vci-400 will be the standard midi controller LMAO!

them I'm not really standard :D I only have one eye :P

And with waves you don't even need the ears anymore, lol!

I think the term "standard" is overplayed and mixed with the term "quality". However in the sense of Professional D.J. Turntables the Technics 1200's set and maintained the bar for all subsequent Professional D.J. Turntables.

I just ha a conversation with a young man last week about this, Turntables are no longer the standard (imo), less and less djs are using them, CD players are also being used less and less, and Time Codes as well, not sure we can still call these methods the "Standard" by any means.

The amount of controllers that have hit the market is completely nuts, some of these brands will soon dissapear, its very competitive, and lets face it, it hasnt hit a plateau because most of the manufacturers are still in development stages, Numark, Denon, A/H and Pioneer are being very agressive, and then we have all the other brands like hercules and vestax that are pushing for a piece of that market... lets not forget Technics, they've scrapped the 1200s but they will not stay quite, Stanton has yet to reply in a meaningful way...

Im not sure there is a standard at the moment, i feel this industry is in a transition stage, and will be for several years because of the advances in technology, only the strong will survive, then we will be able to make an educated assesment...

my two cents...

I regularly get calls from friend bar/club owners and djs asking for my opinion, this is my conclusion...

Turntables:

Big & Heavy, Fragile records, Fragile needles and you need to know how to set up the toner arm properly... Crates of records, or Time Codes and a soundcard...

CD Players:
Smaller & compact. You must move around a good amount of CDs, when using timecodes (MP3s) many features of the CD Player are useless, unless they are MIDI compatible but that drives the price up...

Controllers:
Compact! A good investment in one will provide you with a 4in/out soundcard that will allow you to use CDs and/or Turntables should you need to. Platters are getting bigger which is good for scratching, and software developers are making mapping files for the more popular brands so compatibility issues are everyday less and less.

To club owners i tell them to just buy a a workhorse of an amp and speakers. Generally those DJs with 2 turntables will have the mixer to practice at home, same with those who use CD players...
Those who have Controllers are able to plug them in the same way...
Ive noticed at some clubs ive played recently, they no longer have CD players, just a good 4 channel mixer such as Pioneer or A/H...

I think thats wishful thinking, just pray Denon doesn't stop making stuff, unlike Pioneer Denon make a wider more creative range.

honestly, i rate vestax way higher than denon in terms of quality... but thats only because they make better gear LOL, well that and i have only ever used 3000 denons, but vestax mixers are heaven to crab with, denon to me were always mobile dj kit.. not scratch gear like vestax

technics dug themself into a hole because the 1200 series were just too reliable! and there efforts into cdj technology were left behind by pioneer. stanton are pathetic now compared to when they were paired with vestax and numark so i wouldn't hold your breath for there attempt at the new generation of controllers. i'd say the real players of controller supremicy are numark, vestax and reloop, (but i might be biased as i use reloop now) hopefully pioneer pull their finger out and release a real controller!, but with what is on offer from vestax in the vci-400 there isn't much i want more then what they are offering..

Wait after nearly 3 decades, now there's a standard? Well how come we overcame and nobody told me? Let someone tell me that BS and I'll ask them if their girl is still thirsty after I gave her a swallow!
